Subject: Problems with '93 Dak??? IP: Logged
Message: Hey people!
A friend of mine bought a '93 3.9L v6 last night. And although I commend him greatly on his choice of vehicle, he did not research this particular truck very well. No CARFAX report, didn't shop around, walked on the lot and said "I want that one". Anyway what I would like to know from anyone who owns or have owned a '93 3.9L, is there any major problems he might have, or reoccuring problems?
Also for the same truck with the same Km on it (162,000 roughly) was it worth $6,200? Or did he get screwed by the dealer?
Thanks in advance!

Message: Well I'm sorry to tell ya but I just bought my 94 Dakota extended cab 3.9 L Topper, Tow package, Chrome wheels, Bedliner, With new Tires, very clean, 140 K miles and paid $3500. I though I paid alittle much for it but I needed a vehicle quick and just stumbled across this one. No offense but I feel quite abit better.

Message: Yep Canadian prices... I don't feel bad at all. I mean the guy's a bit of a putz (namely he's been giving me grief about modding my truck to what I want), so I feel not the smallest bit bad that he got screwed by the dealer. But still, I was just curious as to how badly he got it in the butt. Turns out he took it like a sheep in Scotland.
Other than that, were there any big problems with the '93s?

Message: I own a 1993 Dodge dakota super cab with the v-6 magnum motor. From what i have researched the only common problems with this year truck are the timing chain stretching out and rattling do to no tensioner, and the fan clutch and catalyic converter going bad . Besides these things the truck is overall an excellent value. On kellys blue book on private party the value of this year truck is around $4900 dollars depending on the condition.

Message: My timing chain seems to need replacing every 150,000 km, or so. I'm up to 298,000 now and it needs replacing. Did it at 150,000 km. Some kind of electronic adjuster would be nice, but I can't imagine how that'd work - a chain is either the right length, or it isn't. And electronix on the vehicle are great.
Anyone else have problems with the psgr's side having a draft along the floor?

Message: I have a 93 dodge dakota LE 3.9L V6 magnum ext. cab. IT's got 126,245 miles on it right now. The timing chain is the only main common problem with that year of truck. I just recently had a leak in my radiator so i had to fix that and the truck wouldnt start every so often and so i had the solenoid connections fixed.
Here is a list of what i have all replaced on my 93 dakota (hint some of them werent needing replaced just that i wanted to extend the yrs of my truck by doing so.) :
muffler(walker) all 4 shocks(Gabriel gas ryder LT's) idler arm, water pump, fuel pump w/sending unit, solenoid connections, timing chain, tie rods, and the radiator. spent about $1200 in all

Message: Same except for the idler arm. My rad blew while idling. Catches a guy's attention.
No draft to bother the passenger in the front passenger's seat, then. My cousin has a Durango and has the same draft. Noticeable in Manitoba in winter, I'll tell you.
Thanx

Message: Other than paying about 2K too much he got a good truck. 2wd or 4X4? Bad history of the A500 4x4 tranny. My 3.9L had an ignition problem @ 217,000 miles... the lower half of the engine ignited blowing 3 rods out the Oil Pan in different directions. Other than that it's just been routine preventative maintenance stuff.
There is an orifice screen in the OD Housing that needs to be riveted in place otherwise it falls out causing the OD to overheat and the planetary gear disentigrates. (happened twice before I found the culprit).

Message: I just bought a 93 extended cab, 4x4 with the V6 and automatic about 6 months ago. It has 145,000 miles now on the original timing chain. It rattles a LOT. But I use it to tow my Seadoo to the lake, and haul a bunch of crap around, and it handles it very well. The transmission shifts too hard from 1-2 sometimes, but otherwise it shifts great.

Message: If it's rattling "a lot," it's my experience that soon the 'puter won't adjust the timing and she won't idle anymore - won't maintain about a thou rpm.
That's what "wrenched" me back into the real world of gnutz and bholtz.

Message: If you want a tip for the timing chain, if it rattles replace it but not with stock! Replace it with a double roller chain. The damn thing could have 300,000 more miles in it after that. the double roller chain wont stretch.

Message: well its not hard and not easy, you have to take your radiator, fan, water pump, and all the front of your engine apart. a tip though, unbolt the main bracket in the front with your a/c compressor , alternator, and i think powersteering pump on it and tie it up. that saves time. then just replace the chain and gears, which you can get for around 70 dollars and not the 300 the dealer says. if yours is like mine was you will have to turn the cam a bit by hand to get it to line up right, i had over an inch of slack in my chain. anyway, i hope that helps a bit.

THE BLASTED THING ONLY HAD 42,000 MILES ON IT.IT HAS 81,000 NOW AND THE ONLY PROBLEM SO FAR WAS A BLOWN RAD.IT TENDS TO BE A BIT COLD NATURED, BUT I HAD ANOTHER 93 AND YOUDA THOUGHT IT WAS THE SAME TRUCK.ALL THE PROBS IVE NOTICED SEEM TO BE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME WITH EVERYONE. ALOT OF BLOWN RADS.THE ONLY THING I WAS DISAPPOINTED ABOUT WAS IT WAS A 3.9. BUT ITS A SCREAMER.IT IS TIME FOR SOME MODS THOUGH MOSTLY BOLT-ONS. OH YEA, BACK TO THE POINT, IVE SEEN LESS PROBLEMS WITH 94 DOWN THAN 95 UP.IT SEAMS THAT THE 2000S HAVE THE MOST PROBS.NOT A FACT BUT A OBSERVATION. OH AND I GOT THE TRUCK BECAUSE MY BRO IN LAW STUCK A 357 TO HIS HEAD.I ALWAYS LIKED HIS TRUCK WAY MORE THAN HIM. WHAT A DUMBASS.MAN I THINK I WENT WAY TO FAR INTO THAT. SORRY GUYS.
