I have dual exhaust on my 3.9. It isn't true duals, but I love the sound and look of them, though. I have it split after my flowmaster. I got it for the look and sound more than performance. But I have heard that if you run true duals, that it is too open and doesn't create enough backpressure. I hope that helps a little!

I myself have been looking to do some Duals. I was looking to run some new JBA headers and have 2 Cats (state makes me have them) and 2 mufflers Basically the ol 1 pipe per 3 cylinders. I've had someone tell me to fun an equalizer pipe between the 2. Anyone ever hear of this? Is this a good or potentially bad thing to do?

don't run true duals like that....You will create very little back pressure on the v6's...very bad for low end. If you want duals do the single in dual out.

ya man....First thing you should do is the V8 TB. It really will bring back the low end torque you have been missing. Im waiting on a turbo kit too. Gotta save some $$$ I suppose.

O.K. please forgive me in advance but other than the enjoyment of working on your trucks. Why are so many people putting so much money into these V6's? Bragging rights? I just purchased this Dakota with the 3.9L owned about 2weeks and have already found and bought a 360 V8 to replace the 3.9 L V6. I have 650 dollars in a complete engine high miles but complete and it runs. With a bone stock rebuild kit (another $500 approx.), rebuild the heads 175 dollars thats parts at alittle over cost and a buddy will grind and lap them for me, Labor free, $75 dollars for the computer and off we go with all kinds of low end torque plus a good little runner. Did I forget the couple of days walking the junk yards to find the spare little parts. I hope people don't take offense to this question, but with a little digging, some wheel and dealing.

Most of us with V6s have them cuz 1. There a little better on gas. 2 It s alot harder to pull mucho HP out of a V6 than it is a V8, so its more challenging to make the HP for reason 3. 3 cuz its a blast pulling up to someone at a light...BLOWING THEIR DOORS OFF and then seeing their face when they find out they got wasted by a little V6. Other than that..I woulda bought another V8.
My 2 cents...

got mine cause it was marked down, black(mistake, shows everything), 4x4 (little mistake, speed would have been better), convenient dealer location, never get a car for that reason) I regret the V6 everyday. 4.7 gets but milage too.

Everett, Why buy a new V6 and immediately replace a perfectly reliable engine (with alot of promise) with a bigger one with high miles? Trust me this mod of yours is going to cost much more than any of ours. Plus you get to deal with the hassel of rebuilding a truck from scratch. Everything changes.... Trust me I have seen the process. You need to start from the ground up. It would have been smarter to spend the extra few grand to get the 5.9 rather than spend an extra $1,300 on a used engine (voiding the warranty) with no guarantees. OUCH Thats gotta hurt.

1998 3.9 (certainly ain't no friggin V8)automatic...3.55, jet stage 2, 180* t-stat,K&N cold air intake, V8 tb, JBA headers, High flow cat, Delta 50 flowmaster dual exhaust, 8.5mm wires,19# injectors +more. Im addicted and i can not stop?......So I will just go faster!

Daktout, thats kind of what I thought and I can understand that. I've just been reading through more and more posts and looking at aftermarket websites and everything seems to be pretty pricey and its still just a V6. There also seems to be alot of people complaining about the low end or lack there of, (lack of true torque or seat of the pants power).

Teke450, I didn't buy a new truck I wanted a dakota with the older body style and just ran across this one. The reason I bought it was because it was so clean in and out I wish I had a digital camera I would post a pick or two. It was just very well taken care of and plus a one owner. As far as costing more than the mods that I've seen here I don't agree but thats to each his own. I don't plan on replacing the V6 for awhile probably more like this winter or early spring as I need it to drive everyday to work. There's only one Point I would like to leave you with, I figure when its all said and done I will have about $1500-1750 in rebuilding and installing the motor, which you might think is alot but remember that yes it will be a 5.7 L and it will be rebuilt both the motor and trans. Granted bone stock but still basically new. Gas millage will suffer but how much 2-3 miles to gallon is what I figure and with some exhaust work and a performance chip it should get some of that back.

Again this was just my $.02 and I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Your right, my dad always said, there is no replacement for cubic inches. A 360 in your truck will probably scream, even stock. If your gonna build it up a bit, why not have some fun. Get yourself a MP cam kit ($175) a 4 bbl intake (swap meet maybe $100) and a good carb ($225) and enjoy the sound and added power. For a few dollars more that wont hurt your milage much (at least if you dont stick you foot in it, which we all know is impossible) you can really enjoy that 360.
Yeah parts for the 3.9 are a bit pricey, but after I spend the $1200 to $1500 your gonna spend, I'll have a truck that is still better on gas, and just as quick as yours with a warranty.
No offence taken here, just trying to get ya to see the V6 side of the fence. Whatever you do, we still have the agreement that we are all driving the best trucks on the road.
