Message: OH LORD GURU OF DAKOTA..please straighten me out.
I traded my '00 QC 5.9 in on a '02 V6 Sport...that was my first mistake. I REALLY miss the power...anyway...my '02 is a 5 speed, air, cruise, power almost everything. I have a couple of concerns: 1. when I downshift coming to a stop usually 5 mph or less, 1st gear wants to grind, is something out of whack? 2. almost everytime I start it for the first time of the day, it sounds like its backfiring thru the intake when a shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd...is it just cuz its cold? 3. I am getting conflicting stories about milaege increases....I drive it from near Dayton, Oh to Detroit, Mi about 2 times a month, I NEED better mileage..thats why I traded my QC in. I already have a homebrew cold air, and a Magnaflow 1 into 2 with 2" out the back. What else can I do (if anything)??
Any response will be appreciated
ps..the truck is 2 months old and has 7700 miles on it.

On the downshift, the AX-15 is known for that (even shifting at high-rpm's doesn't always work). On the backfire issue, have the dealer check the distributor index...it should be around 4-6 (they're also known for being slightly out of whack from the dealer).
On the mileage, there's not a whole lot you can do as the average for the V6 is 15-17mpg with the high (on the highway) being about 18.
What gearing is in the '02 (driveline - diff gears).

I no nothing bout trannys for these things..is its not a 727 Tflite..I'm lost :) Besides that, my QC was an auto that I had beefed up.
I'm getting about 19 to 20 mpg running 70 to 75 mph with 1000 lbs on the back. Would a V8 TB help any??

The QC was only getting 16 on the highway....the V6 is running close to 20, so I cant complain too much...I run about 80,000 a year, so the mileage increase made the difference for me to justify the trade, even though I REALLY miss the power and the space of the QC.

Message: oh 80,000 a year...damn. how do u get 80,000 a year?? what do u do???
i guess that makes sense for the 20 mpg. btw if u can stand 55-60 you'll get like 22+ highway...i can't so i get like 13 city 15 highway
you should have gotten a 4.7 they get better milage then V6s

Message: Blackdak..thanks for the info....I'll be looking at a Club Cab 4.7 in about 13 months..thats about the life span for my trucks. I bought my QC in Jan of '00 and traded it in in March with 64,000 on it...thank god I have 2 other vehicles or I would have logged about 90,000 on it and really lost my @ss at trade in.
If the 4.7 get the same mileage...with a few tweaks I guess I can get it to do a little better too huh?
ANYBODY WANNA BUY A TRUCK??
I have a 87 Dak that had a 4 cyl in it....anybody know how to put a V8 in w/o going thru Schumaker?

Message: Noah,
On the power side, a simple V8 TB swap (keeping everything else basically stock) will help as well as just replacing the muffler with a higher-flow unit. The MPG you're getting on the highway is pretty good for a 4200lb V6 truck! :)
I wouldn't modify it too much if you want to keep it fairly "stock" (resale value).

Message: I wouldn't if you want to sell it and if you drive that much it can get on your nerves after a while. i think i prefered the lack of power(muffler doesn't really do as much as people say i dont think) it will add some high end power, but lately mine is annoying the hell out of me to the point where I'm about ready to stick the stock system back on and try to unload the catback on ebay, but i doubt I will. too much trouble. I think I'll go with borla or jba next time though. not too happy with gibson. louder then they said it would be, but not good loud, akward rattly loud. I regret it. waste of $300. good thing it isn't SS, I can let it rust and get a new one sooner...but thats my problem, not urs.
I agree with bernd though. don't modify it if you aren't going to keep it.
is it a 2wd??? RC or CC??

Message: Its a 2wd regular cab......BIG mistake....there is NO room in a reg cab....for me let alone anything else...subs....overnight bag....road atlas.....dust bunnies....its cramped and I'm 5' 11".......you get the idea.
Hate to say it, but maybe I'l get lucky and have a REAL big deer run out in froont of me so I can go get a new 4.7 QC!!

Message: why not get a 4.7 CC?? should be plenty of leg room for you and you'l get better pickup and milage without the extra weight. the CC has enough (not by much) leg room for me and I'm 6'4". I once sat in a RC...wow!! no room at all. I drove a civic and I fit in it better then the RC. The RC ram wasn't much better either..
ummm, but how about you just spare the poor deer and get a new one now??

Message: Noah: Just stick with the factory exhaust tubing (2.5" Single Out) and replace the factory muffler with a higher performance model. While the performance gains may not be noticeable on the bottom end, the muffler will help out on mid-top end power (and the sound is much nicer as well).

Message: OK, I think I got it now....I took the duals off today and just ran a single with the Mangaflow...sounds alot better than the droning it was doing at 70...
Why dont I get a QC or CC?? Cuz I just bought this one 2 months ago..I tried to trade it back in...my trade in value dropped $8000 in a MONTH!!!YOU BELIEVE THAT!?!?! I about CRAPPED! So now I own a $10,000 truck that I paid $19,000 for...like I said...sometimes ya gotta learn the hard way.
Took it to the dealer today, have an appointment in the morning to get the backfiring issue looked at, plus its due for its second oil change..I run it ALOT!
Thanks for all the input.

The 87 was a 4 cyl 5 spd... no engine in it now...the tranny and drive shaft plus some parts are there. It has a 360 with a 727 in it now..not bolted down or running... I have no idea if it runs or not, but its a clean engine..I bought it that way. I have a complete 340, an 8 3/4 rear end for it, (no pig, just a set of 3.55 gears in the box), headers, and factory manifolds. The 360 in it is a 4 bbl motor, original or not I dont know. The truck is red, and clean...some minor surface on the wheel lips, and a minor ding on the d.s. fender. I'll take $500 for the body with the 360 in it..the way I got it. Another $350 takes the rear, gears, 340, and any other engine parts I have.
