Subject: New homebrew intake idea... IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone!
So, I went to my favorite store (or only auto store where I live) yesterday and decided to busy myself for the afternoon. When I was in autozone, I came across a nice polished alum. intake for an acura (email me if you want the specs). So, I bought it and a cheapy cone filter, just in case it didnt work, and went home and proceeded to mount it to my dak. I used the trusty ferncos and pvc (painted black of course) to match the short alum. tube to the air hat etc.. and then mounted the intake. To my surprise, the whole thing worked out beautifully. The moral of the story, $60 and some crappy ricer stuff can make a decent performance part for our daks.
I will be putting innstructions, information on my website soon, so if you have any questions, just mail me.
Keep on tooling

I need to borrow my friends digicam, and then I will take some pics, put them up, etc.... My web address is www.uberdavis.com, but nothing is there yet, I just registered a couple of days ago. (actually it is a computer class site, but that is a long story).
I will get the box from the intake and write down the specs, materials, and measurements tomorrow.

Message: Hey the problem with the intake that you used is the diameter of the pipe. the pipe is like 2" where the factory one is 3" so you could have went to home depot and bought some black pcv for the sink then used pcv pipe to finish the touchs with a k&n my hole system cost $65 dollars and gave me 4/10 in the quarter. If any one needs specs or would like one just let me now

Message: southern118 knows whats up! Just go to your local hardware store and get some 3" PVC and a ruber thingy used to conect the pvc to your tophat. Easy as pie. Ohh and i guess you need 2 elbows so you can get the filter to be up front right beside your radiator. Sweet intake with min moneys..

Message: just wait till this summer when it gets into the upper 90's outside and all that pvc melts onto the exhaust pipe then catches fire.

Message: Hey, I'm back.
Bill the Cat: First of all, the pipe is painted with heat resistant paint. The paint won't do much, but it will help. Second, I *have* run on 90 deg. days and the pipe is fine. With cooler air running through it constantly, the pipe will cool. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with the pipe even getting soft. As for melting into the exhaust and catching fire, wouldn't it have to go through the intake, heads, and pistons first? Granted it would fark up the motor on the way, but the liklihood of it catching fire is nill.
For everyone else: Sorry for the delay! I host my site at school and the d4mn nazi admin is on my case about bandwidth usage, sooo, it may be awhile until my site comes back up. If I can get my friend's digicam tonite, I will try and throw the pics on the forum (if i can remember how ;-) )
Whew! Talk to you all soon.

Message: Catman, you have no idea what your talking about. I've ran the truck on days hoter than 90 and the intake is still there. I think if you go check around, it takes more than 90 degres of "air heat" to melt 3" PVC. It takes a while to burn it with a torch!!

Message: 95Dak, for a homemade intake you use your stock airhat, a rubber fitting (i dont know what its really called, but it has 2 screw clamps on each side to connect the airhat to your new intake.) 3" PVC pipe, i used 2 elbows because when i had just one my AC lines got in the way and i wanted to place the filter right beside the ratiator. You can do it anyway you want. I'm sure just about anythings better than that big black box. :-p Just look at some pics of intakes and find something you like and copy the way it is bent to your homemad one..

Message: Hey guys,
The farking serv of mine is still down. I think the university got wise on my web serving :-( I will *try* to get them up somtime in the near future.
95dak: Everything rooknute said was cool. The rubber connector is called a fernco connector and is in the plumbing section at any home depot. Try autozone too, and look for an intake for an acura integra. I ferncoed that to the end of my airhat, put about a 6-8 inch piece of pvc on the fernco, then ferncoed the acura intake to that. It looks really sharp and was decently cheap.
Sorry for the delay everyone, but I am trying to work on it! I will keep everyone posted...

Message: ABS is a better material to use for this than PVC, as it is more temperature resistant, vibration and force resistant, and won't melt as easily and give off noxious fumes if you're in a wreck and the thing gets crammed up against your manifolds...something I read on a website somewhere.

Message: ZhEn you got it all wrong little one. I got two of them daks out in my junkyard with homebrewed pvc intakes on them what caught fire and burned up the whole truck. also, when pvc burns it produces MUSTARD GAS a very deadly gas that was used in WW1 to kill and permanently injure hundreds of thousands of soldiers. Ask you high school chemistry teacher about that one. or your local computer nerd. there are two kinds of ethernet cable being used to today, plenum and pvc. pvc is not to be used in hot air plenums as it begins to produce mustard gaas at relatively low tempuratures. I repeat this many time on many different postings as mustard gas danger is way over looked by too many young kids that think they know it all, but don't realize they don't till after thier lungs are seared by the gas and they end up having to drag an O2 bottle every where, the unlucky ones die. Mustard gas and chlorine gas are the same thing, just a differnt name, the Mustard part of the name comes from the heavy yellow mustard color of the gas. so if you think you are smarter then basic physics and chemistry go ahead and use your system, I just would not want to be the guy carrying your life insurance.

Message: I think that I used the same cai as you zhen. I have pics at my old site, as the truck has changed a little since then. Check the pictures out at sweb.uky.edu/~jamari1/ Just go to the projects and then to cold air intake and you can see the one picture that I have right now. And yes it was for an early 90's Acura or Civic and it worked just fine for me too. I wish I hadn't now but I bent over the two little intake pipes and filled them with jb weld.
