I'm only 16 years old and I don't have a lot of money for gas and i was wondering how to improve my fuel economy in my '97 dakota (3.9L V6). I get around 14 mpg now and i'd like to know various ways to increase this number.

I have a 2001CC 3.9L 4x4 and have been able to gain 2mpg by adding a homebrew cold air intake and a set of autolite 3923's

Make sure your tires are properly inflated. You would be surprised what even a pound diference will make. I have found the dealer sets them to 32 so you get a softer ride I put them at 35 and get 17mpg easily on mostly city short run driving.

TWO WORDS. TONNO COVER.

Just installed one on my truck last week and my milage went from 13 city to 15 city. And I still drive it the same as I always have. You will feel the difference once the cover is installed.

Muffler will help, I get about 15mpg mostly city driving, I have a flowmaster 40. I could probably get better fuel economy, but I love the sound and can't keep my foot out of the gas :)

I have a 1993 with a 3.9 Auto. and I get 19 MPG . I have a cap on the back . Check your O2 sensors . My milage dropped from 19 to 13 when mine went bad . Replace the air charge sensor ( it's cheap at NAPA ) If you have an Auto. make sure your tranny's not slipping . Good luck

Some people don't believe in them but I built my own hydrogen system and put on my 93 Dakota 3.9 5 speed, put the rear end from an automatic in it and put on a double hydrogen system and my mileage jumped from 20mpg average to 27MPG average, I was thrilled.

I have a tonneau cover and side skirts, I run my tires at 38-40 PSI, the combo has me quite pleased

I was talking to a physics major who informed me that the injectors are pumping way to much fuel for a 3.9 motor. The 23 lb injectors can be swapped for Fords 19 lb injector and you will drastically improve fuel mileage and power as well. Anyone else tried this?

actually, '99 & up use 21# injectors and they are not what determines how much fuel goes into the engine. the PCM does that using signals from the O2 sensor, MAP sensor and a couple of others. you can go to Bosch 21# injectors with the 4 hole design and save fuel as they have better fuel atomization and tighter tolerances. check out fiveomotorsports.com.
