Subject: headers on non mag 3.9 IP: Logged
Message: I am thinking about buying a pair of headers for my 2wd 1990 Dak. Its a 3.9 with dual Flowmaster ehxaust, home brew cold air K&N intake, Lifted 5in and 31's. Are the headers worth the money? Any HP specs? Thanks alot.

Message: The early Gen I Dakota headers are very inexpensive. Your choices are either Edelbrock or Mopar Performance. They range between $140-$190. I have an '89 and am using the Mopar's. But I've heard great things about the Edelbrocks. Yes, they are worth the money and time. Yes they will increase not only hp's, but also mpg's. In fact, if you really want some increases, replace your stock catalytic converter with a free flowing aftermarket one. Yours is made of a honeycomb interior, and it really sucks.
The headers are awesome, and will require some maintenance on your part. Every couple of months you will need to tighten the bolts to stop leaks. Other than that, you should love the headers.

Message: TigerDak, please tell me where you get headers for our trucks for under $200.00! The ones I have seen are about $250.00 for Summit. They are Edlebrock. Would you recomend getting new header bolts or are the stock ones OK? And do you have to tighten them to a specific torque?
About the cat, what brand will you back? I have heard Catco is good. But I dont have any prior knowledge of them. Thanks again Tigerdak.

Message: I got my Mopar headers from www.buymopar.com. They sell Mopar Performance items at 30% off the catalog prices.
The Edelbrocks should be $185 from Summit. I checked into Summit's availability and prices when I was shopping around. They had the Edelbrocks for $185 when I was shopping. I picked up the Mopar ones for $145!!!
I am not familiar with aftermarket cats - seeing how my county doesnt do emissions, I just cut mine off and havent had to worry about an aftermarket cat!
Yes, the bolts should be set at a certain torque. I had a professional exhaust shop do it all for me since I didnt have time. The headers will come with bolts, or atleast they should....

Message: TigerDak, thanks for the help. I just looked in my newest Summit cata. and the Edlebrock headers have a price of $239.95. Strange how my engine is a 239 cid also. Are you talking about the Heddman Headers? Well, anyways, not to be nosy but could you give me an idea of about how much an exhaust shop charges to put headers on? I am in college and dont have a ton of extra $. But I do love my Dak alot.
And about your cat, People here have told me that if I cut it off, I will actually loose power. They said the engine needs the back preassure to run crrectly. What year of Dak did you cut the cat off of? And was yours extremely hard to remove? Mine seems to be almost welded on after 12 years. Thanks for your help man. Have a good Fri.

Message: My truck is an '89. I have headers and am catless, and the truck runs great. I'm not sure who's telling you that or why...
Anyways...I rented a saw-zall and cut it out in about 30 minutes.
An exhaust place will charge around $300 for the header installation. It will take them about 5 hours, considering they, by law, must hook up all emission connections, too. Wait until AFTER the header installation to tinker with the cat!
If you are a traditional backyard mechanic, dont attempt the header installation. Its a huge project and would require some extensive tools, mainly power tools.

Message: TigerDak, You said $300 bucks to install. Wow, I never thought it would be like that. I dont know man, maybe I should go there then. I dont know if 15 HP is worth over $400.
About your cat. After you removed it, did you feel the truck run better? What about torque? I can get the sawzall no prob. So I might try that.
I am the definition of a back yard mech. I will call around to find out about the header install. I have got some good friends around. Maybe something will pop up. Never Know. Thanks for the info.

What do you rate your Dak's HP at now?
