Subject: Different intakes any better? IP: Logged
Message: Is there much of a difference between the
intakes available for the v6 dakota (2001)? Im
looking at getting a K&n but for the cost im
wondering if a cheaper one is going be just as
good? i dont want to build my own though
because i dont trust myself heh =] is K&N the
way to go?

Message: Any intake that includes a cone air filter is going to make diffrence. I have cound cone airfilters at my local pep boys for $30 that r just as good as a k&n. But if you are going for cost efficency, do what some of my friends have done. Just get a jig saw and cut out the front of the air box. It will make about the same diffrence as a cone filter.

See my post "Airaid Air Intake For Sale" on this board.
I will try and e-mail you a pic of it this weekend. Truck Performance sells them for $160.

Yes the K&N Gen2 might be an arm and a leg, but according to the K&N website it's been "dyno built" whatever that means. I have heard from a few sources that the secret of the K&N Gen2 is the shape of the tube as well as the restyled airhat. It's supposed to increase airflow over a similar shaped home-brew intake. Just be careful of the cruise control as I've heard of fitment problems with a v6. Might be worth an email to K&N.
Any intake with an accordian hose will not flow as much as one with a smooth inlet (such as the home-brew PVC type) whether it has the same conical filter on the end or not.
Optimal placement of the cone filter should be either near your fender where the original air intake was or next to the radiator support. Anything that stops over or next to the valve covers is going to soak up too much exhaust heat.

The thing with round air filters is that they work excellent as long as you can get fresh air to them and not heated engine bay air. If you have an open air filter in an enclosed engine bay on a hot (or even warm) summer day, you can kiss any performance increases good-bye.
I went from an open air filter to the intake I have now and it was well worth it. I do think the open air filter looks better, but if you're looking for constant gains then it's not worth it.
There are a couple manufacturers that make an enclosure that pipes cool air to an open air filter via two ducts that are supposed to work pretty good. Or you can supply fresh air yourself (without the enclosure) by using the rigid aluminum dryer duct as seen below.
The drivcer's side duct was run under the front bumper. It caught plenty of air, but I did get some strange looks from it.
And yes, these photos were taken when my Dak was pratically brand new :-)

The ducts are just held into place against the air filter via zip ties. They never moved away from the filter.

Message: I'd get the 360 air intake:
1. You won't have to worry about the airhat cracking at the base like the K&N does.
2. Less expensive than the K&N.
3. Now comes with a heat shield.

I haven't studied that option, but I believe there are too many obstructions (frame supports, radiator supports, etc.) for the ducts to be run without getting too many bends in it.
You want to keep the ducts as straight as possible to help get airflow to the filter and too many bends will slow it down to the point of the filter sucking in more engine bay air then duct air.

Message: I've pondered the option of running ram air through my fog lights too and I believe you're right about the obstructions.
There's just too much stuff in the way to run it down to the fog lights.
I like the way you ran the one to the hole beside the radiator. Is there any way I can run something like that with a cone style K&N that I have now?

Brent,
Yes you can run something down to beside the radiator. I had a tube made up out of aluminized steel (exhaust pipe) and the K&N cone filter comes to within a couple inches of the opening as seen below.
If you want to use a smaller filter with an open end you could run it even closer. Either that or you could take some aluminum and/or fiberglass and fabricate something up that seals off the opening and then funnels the air to the filter.
