Okay, I have to admit....sometimes I just want to trade the Dak in and get another vehicle. Then again, I LOVE my truck too, so I want to keep it.

Anyway, I was at a local Ford Dealer today looking at their ugly ass pickups. I was talking to a salesman there who told me it was a good time to trade up my Dak. Less than 50K and I would get close to pay off. The problem was that this salesman started telling me how bad the crash test ratings were on my Dak and how much better they are on a Ford. I sort of got ticked off...this guy was talking about my Dak. So I told him I thought the prices were too high on Ford Trucks and left.

So...this leads me to my question. I have a 98 Dak...and a search of the internet didn't really turn up any information an crash test ratings. I would think that since the Dak has a full frame under it that it would survive a pretty good crash. Anyone know any information regarding this?

Thanks.

i remember something awhile back that i believe it was the 97-00 were rated at poor but the newer daks were i believe acceptacle or something like that.....but i know that the rangers and daks were on the same level in the newer years 97-00 had the worst crash test ratings in small trucks....but i couldnt see how a 4000lb truck would do worst than a 2900lb truck....kinda messed up i think......and the only ford that is worth a look at is the lighting but they are overpriced.

Having been in an, admittedly minor, accident with my Dakota I can say it did it's job well. An observer told me that the entire rear of my truck came three feet off the ground, and the truck jumped forward 10-20 feet from sheer impact only.

Damage to myself? None except a minor headache and one -hell- of an adreniline rush.

Damage to truck? New bumper, repainted rear where the bumper hit the paint, repainted and repaired dings in back of cab where bed smacked into it.

Cost? $2500, insurance paid for totally (mostly labor, and the $@&ers still didn't get it right!)

The frame didn't bend, the truck drives the same as always, and there aren't any new rattles or noises afterwards. Heck, the cop didn't even want to write a report because the damage looked less than $500 (I made him do it anyway, stupid city cop). I've heard several different people on this board say they've been in accidents with their truck and walked away.

That said, I think the Dakota recieved a 'Poor' rating on the Frontal Offset collision... I'm not sure.

Mine took out a 100 ft standing gaurdrail last
winter....total damage to truck, $800, total
damage to gaurdrail, had to replace the whole
thing, luckily i didnt have to pay for it because i
hit black ice and the sheriff backed me up.
Glad i didnt have to replace that gaurdrail
those things are damn expensive. I was told
that it would cost 3-4000 to replace it if i had to
pay. The dak did its job, i wasnt hurt and the
truck was good as new a week later!

Found this website with crash test information regarding the 97-2000 years. I can't see how this truck can fail like that. I guess looks are deceiving. I guess what bothers me the most is the fact the stearing wheel moves towards the driver.

I ran over some little Toyota once and I'm still here. She got a whole new trunk and lid. I replaced the grille and repainted the bumper for $1500.

I hit her pretty good, but not quite hard enough to get the air bags (thank goodness). I was happy with the results.

From what I've read, the Daks are marginal/acceptable in a front crash and have a high rating for side impact. I think there is data in the 2002 Consumer Reports booklet. This info I believe is for the new trucks (2002).

Go to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration web and check the truck tests. The Dakota crash tests were very good.

I trust myself.....I don't trust others. I, knock on wood, have not had an accident for the last 7 years now. The problem with that is, according to the national insurance institute, most people have an accident or are involved in an accident every 7 years. So guess what.....my time is about to expire.

not always true. 0 accidents in 16 years.

there are those people that have 3 or 4 accidents in a few years that throw the curve. as long as the other guys are having accidents, then you can go even more years without one and still not disturb the average. ;-)

haha....those Ford guys kill me. I hit a deer while driving at about 55 MPH about a month ago...this was your standard size deer. I hit him head on, and knocked him about 20 feet or so. Damage? NONE. According to a Ford salesman who let it slip before he knew what he said, "Damm! I don't think a Ford F150 can do that!"

From my searches, the front crash ratings are acceptable to good on the Dakota, and side crash ratings are excellent. Of course you might get different accounts on different webpages (how, I don't know) but they're just fine in crashes.

Current mods: A MUFFLER. That's it. (For now.)
Future mods: Tonneau cover
Underdrive pulleys
Removal of clutch fan
K&N FIPK
17" rims
And much, much more.....

even seen the F-150 crash test??? the whole passenger compartment gets crushed. daks have good ratings for everything except offset which is biased against heavy cars sure the dak loses to a brick wall but try hitting a civic with one and all that will be left of it is a pile of V-Tec and 5 star crash test rating.

Last weekend I was in a head on collision with a Toyota Tacoma. My '04 Dakota Quad cab 4x4 is totalled. My family is OK. I was going 40 mph. and she was cruising over 70 and drunk.I've got to say that my Dakota did its job better than the Tacoma. Everyone in my Dakota is in good condition except for bruises and air bag burns. The driver of the Tacoma was not so fortunate.

Keep it in the can/bottle...from what I've heard, warm beer sucks anyway. Your stomach ain't a cooler.

My dad got a DUI a few months ago... hit a fire hydrant on the way home from the bar. The van was a lease and he owed $18,000 on it. It cost him $11,000 to have the van fixed, including a new frame. He hasn't touched a drop of alcohol since. As he said, "That's 11,000 reasons why you shouldn't drink." It all had a positive outcome on me too... I became straight edge. I already have been against smoking from my mom having cancer in her lungs, never liked illegal drugs, and now I'm against drinking as well.

Anyway...sorry to ramble. While I usually hate seing old posts brought up, I didn't mind this one. It was pretty informative. Brian, it's definitely good to hear you and your family is ok.
