Subject: Constant "weeeeeeee" sound... IP: Logged
Message: The subject pretty much sums it up: My g/f
1999 Dak 4x4 makes a constant
"weeeeeeeeeeee" sound once warmed up. It
doesn't change with revs and it doesn't stop
when the vehicle is not in motion.
The belt is brand new.
Any thoughts/experiences? TIA

If it's the sound that I'm thinking of it means the water pump is on the way out.

Message: if it were the water pump, wouldn't the noise increase and decrease as the revs go up and down? i've been racking my brain on that noise all day and i can't come up with anything. i was thinking that maybe it was a leak in a vacuum hose that was making the noise.
it would help if you could tell us where the noise was coming from.

Sorry... :0)
I'm Intense, I'd get the water pump looked at. Something else it could be is the power steering, check to see if it's low in fluid. Although that typically makes a whining noise... could also be an alternator bearing.
What I'd do, if it makes the noise regardless of momevement or not, is put it in park and pop the hood while it's running. Listen around, see if you can narrow down where it's coming from under the hood.

Message: Couldn't pinpoint the noise, so all I can give
you is "engine compartment" that fan is loud!
(although not as loud as a Chevy) - will check
PS fluid tonight when she's back from work.
My thought leaned towards a bearing,
somewhere, on a device that doesn't alternate
speed in relation to revs. The fan seeems to fit
this description. I know it's of the old clutch
type (vs. electric) belt driven.

BTW, the problem went away. We haven't had any other
problems with this vehicle since then.
Cheers.
