Subject: Looking for Bill the Cat IP: Logged
Message: How did you make you coldair intake out of aluminum dryer vent and aluminum roof flashing? Sounds like the perfect setup since, from what I have read, PVC will melt. Do you have any photos or anything?

Message: Ok here goes, I will try my best to discribe what I did. I removed the airbox with the air filter. I then removed the intake air horn, that downturned twisty piece of plastic on the front of the box. It takes a bit of work to remove it(thanks D/C) but a bit of trial and error will finally get it off. DONOT cut off the part of the box that sticks out and the airhorn is connected to, you will neeed it to attach the vent tube. Then put the airbox back into the truck, as you really gotta have a air filter. Now for the fabrication part. Get a short section (2')of dryer vent that is around 4 inches in dia, (it will fit over the opening in the airbox with just a very little bit of slop.) and cut the end of it with a pair of shop shears or tin snips, at a slight angle so that when it is fit up to the box, it is angled so that it fits in between the radiator and the radiator support on the pass. side. Be very careful with any air conditioner lines that may run through there and do not damage them, and you might have to cut a clearance notch or two to clear them. Remove the rubber flap that covers the area between the radiator and the support, then cut the other end of the dryer vent so it is flush with the radiator and support bracket, and anything else that is in the area. Then take a pc. of roof flashing and cut it to cover the whole area as to get a tight seal on the front , mark the center of the flashing where the vent comes into contact with it, and treat this area as a pie, making 8 or so cuts radially from the center about 2 inches long, (your vent pipe is 4" in dia) and bend them inward,to allow an opening into the vent pipe. keeping in mind that you may have to provide clearance for A/C tubes. then pop rivet the whole thing together using the optional pop rivet washers for support. Be carefull when drilling holes and yes you will have to drill a few in the plates and brackets to hold the flashing in place, but it works and cost nothing out of pocket for me as all the parts were left from another job. One thing you will notice is that there will be a lot more dirt in the air filter and airbox when you check on them so I recommend replacing the filter a little more often then before. I painted everything that is seeable from the exterior front flat black, that-way nobody can see the shiney aluminum behind the grill. Don't use corragated vent tubing as the corragations cause major disruption of the air flow, use smooth wall with the interlocking joint. I wish I had an electronic camera for pictures. I am trying to fab an airhat with a larger volume and a 3 inch smooth airflow from the airbox instead of the 3" corragated D/C provides out of scap aluminum from work, I will let you know how that works at a later date. just for kicks I ran it w/out the airfilter in it one night, the sound was awesome. WWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
