Subject: Serpentine Belt IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 V6 Dakota Sport (40,000 miles). I just replaced the serpentine belt on my truck 1 month ago. I used a socket wrench to move the idler pulley toward the centerline of the engine; this was rather difficult to move. I believe that the idler pulley was not operating properly, because after I moved it toward centerline it stayed in place. I removed the old belt and put on the new belt. I then had to use the socket wrench to move the pulley back in to position to maintain tension on the belt. I checked for play in the belt. I had about 1/2 inch in either direction. I the jogged the engine to see if the pulley would self adjust properly. It did not. So I made sure I had some play in the belt without belt slippage. Now that this was complete I started to notice a noise coming from the engine, it sounded like a bearing was starting to go. The noise has become worse. I believe that due to the idler pulley not operating correctly, that I may have damaged my water pump bearings. I took the truck to the dealer to look at the engine noise location and hear the noise. The service manager had one of the mechanics look at the problem. The very first thing the mechanic did was to check the tension pulley (idler pulley); he said it was sticking and that my water pump bearings are going. What I was wondering. Is this a normal problem Dodge is having with the idler pulleys? And since I replaced the belt, could the idler pulley have caused the water pump shaft undue stress and begin destroying the bearings?

Message: I have 3 different D/C vehicles with a serpintine belt on them yes your tensioner is going but I don't think, but have been wrong before, that your pump is going out. EVERY SINGLE ONE of the D?C cars a 3.0 a 3.5 and a 3.9 ALL have squeally belts when the humidity is high and the air is cool. When the air dries out, the sound goes away. Sometimes even when it is quit warm outside, and a new belt does not fix 'em either. What does seam to work for a while is a little bit of wheel bearing grease on the OUTSIDE NON-RIBBED side of the belt but even after a short time that seems not to help any more. I had to replace the idler-tensioner on the 3.0 at 121K miles and the squealling from the belts has seamed to go away for the last 20k or so.

Message: Those idler pulley(tensioners) are notorious for sticking--going bad, and yes you should have changed that when you did the serp. belt. I just went through this myself on my '93 and my mechanic, luckily, insisted that I change the tensioner when I did the serp. belt since the tensioner lost its "play" I'm not the expert on what problems you have created now with the water pump bearings but I do know that the serp. belt tensioner is nothing to take lightly. Hope you get it worked out. Maybe the noise is the new belt slipping from lack of proper tension? (well at least that would be the easy way out)
