Subject: Nail in my tire
IP: Logged

Message:
Doh!!! I've had my new tires on for only a couple of weeks, and already picked up a nail. Canadian Tire says that it is unfixable, due to the nail being in the sidewall, so I'm going to take it back to where I bought it, over an hour away. In the meantime, my poor truck looks lop-sided.

Damn that just plain sucks!!!

Sidewall damage is the worst, hope the dealer will work with you.

Did you buy and road hazzard protection from them or your auto insurance?

Good luck, Scott

No, in fact I did a cash deal :(. They were really expensive too, $1100. I'm hoping he will either be able to fix it, or give me a deal on a new one.

Good thing it wasn't a rear one, the differential wouldn't have liked that if you put the spare there. I broke one studded tyre twice over winter, then another once. I hate getting flats! At last they were just cheap ole studded tyres, I would be pissed as hell if it was a good one. Good luck on getting a deal from them..

I had some BFG's that literally delaminated at 80 mph (fortunatley I had slowed enough by the time it completely shredded) but they were two weeks old. The dealer (Nat'l Tire & Battery is now owned by Sears) just gave me a new one since there was no noticeable tread wear on the scrap that I brought him. Nice folks over there. Hope your deal turns out the same. You did buy the Road Hazard Warranty, right???

PS- I hate to laugh, but that spare tire looks hilarious compared to the 15x10's.....

Actually, that spare is the stock 15x7, the new ones are 17x10! It's the low profile rubber that makes em look funny. Is that not the ugliest spare you ever saw?

I meant 17x10's..... durrr. Actually I was going to buy a set of those steel 15x6's that come on the base dakotas (like the telephone company and gas company drive) and then I was going to send them to Stockton Wheel in California to have them widened to 15x8 for some slicks. Somehow, slicks always look tough (to me at least) when they are mounted on crappy old rims. Pretty up front and all business out back!!

If you're interested, Stockton Wheel will section (narrow) or widen steel wheels for $80 a wheel. That way you can take stock looking rims and fit Big Meats on them. I can't remember the number, but I'm sure they are on the web somewhere.

You said the puncture was in the sidewall right?

I used to be a tire retailer and I can tell you no tire manufacture recomends a tire be plugged in the sidewall theres just too much flex there and the plug will loosen and come out eventually.

I dont really know what I want to tell you here but be warned to that fact.

Not that the dealer screwed you, but that IS the rim from a Gen II Spare tire...... Must have been a factory left-over from when they brought in the new body style. My Dad's 97 has 5 of the same wheel...... I dunno. Hey, it's just a spare, right?

I was looking at your truck's picture and I just gotta wonder "Why the donuts instead of truck tires?" Is it the "Tim Horton" factor? My brother has a 02 Ram with large 20" rims and they still got real tires on them instead of whatever that dealer sold you. Them things look as if they came off a full ghetto Jap Job.

Some of us dont give a rats a$$ about truck tires, have you noticed trucks are as nice as cars nowadays and can still haul some trash to the dump? in that, what is wrong with making it corner well?

Not all "trucks" as you put it has to be all big tired ready for "truck" action as it used to be outlined in a 1970's manual of what a truck can handle because of its tires.

Fazdak, that is how I picked up the nail, hauling old building scrap to the dump.

Z-ratted is the speedratting of the tire. Z is the highest ratting, and most low profile tires come with the Z-ratting

just look on the sidewall. it will show the size, then a number (wich is the load index) then a letter. either S,T,H,V,W, or Y (the last 2 fall under the Z-ratting.)

W and Y are both under the Z-ratting. the "Z" should be in the size. like this P265/40ZR17

the differance between the W and Y is the speed capibility

W= 168 mph top speed
Y= 186 mph top speed
