Subject: 95 Dakota won't start IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1995 Dodge Dakota, 3.9L V6. This morning
after work, it wouldn't start. Don't think the
engine is even trying to turn over, just a
whirring noise. Tried a jump even though I had
power. Sorta tried to turn over but then just
whirring. Called a mechanic friend who lives too
far to look at it in person. He suggests it's the
bendix(starter issue).
After reading a whole lot of threads about
Dakota's that won't start, I'm pretty sure the
first thing I need to do after work tomorrow is to
check the (115?) splice every thread mentioned. If
that isn't it, then pull starter and have the
parts store check it. After that?
My first question is: For a 1995 Dodge Dakota V6
w/a 3.9L engine...where do I look for splice? Wire
colors? I am not a mechanic so please be specific.
I can read a wiring diagram and do almost anything
with written directions (I learned that working on
machines that make ammunition.) So the more
details, the better.
Second question dumb if you already know but not
if you don't :-) : Where is starter located? How
do I take it off? What tools will I need to pack
in my lunch box to do the job? (Just replaced
headlight switch and connector so those tools are
still in there... Wire cutter/stripper, elec. tape
& connectors so good for tools for #1. Also have
vise grips, pliers, and various screwdrivers.)
What else?
And Bachelor #3 is: What else should I be looking
at? If we need to do a process of elimination,
let's start easy and cheap. My skills and my
pocketbook need to work up to the harder stuff.
Things you might need to know about Lady Grey:
None of the electronic dash stuff works right so I
can't get any codes. I fill her up, clear the trip
meter, and we're good for about 250 miles. I go as
fast as everybody else. If there is no one else, I
mosey along. If I really need to know how fast I'm
going, I smack the dash. I inherited her a couple
of months ago and need all the help I can get to
keep her going and get her "healthy". So thanks
for letting me post and any advice you have will
be appreciated.
