 Subject: Dash dings then battery drains

Hello I hvea 02 dakota sxt and my problem is when I drive it the dash will ding and my battey indicater will stop working.Then it stops chargeing and drains the battery.I have had the alternater tested and was told it was good.I tried useing a codereader but it wouldnt link up and give any codes. Does anybody have a idea whats wrong?
