Subject: 1999 Dakota Sputter IP: Logged
Message: I just purchased a 99 Dakota Sport with 115k miles on it. When I first start it up it will run and as I go down the street it will just sputter and lose power. Now after a short while it warms up or what ever and it will be fine after that. It also takes a while to shift sometimes so I am considering putting some lucas in the tranny fluid to help shifting. Also I noticed if I start it and let it idle it will sputter then rev high and be fine. I plan on replacing the throttle position sensor first. Any ideas what is causing this issue? Oxygen sensor or computer? Thanks all!

Message: Do you have a code reader? If not, get it scanned.
Don't just throw parts at it.
What engine/tranny?

Message: 3.9 liter v6 unknown tranny and i cannot tell you as it is not at my home. Parked until I get proper tags. I do not have a scanner. Auto Zone does the error code reading for free I think.

Message: OK,it's an automatic I assume so it'll likely be the
42RE.
If you get any codes post back.
It could be a number of things.

Message: Actually those scanners are relatively inexpensive I may buy one off amazon and get those codes to you quicker.

Message: Ok. No error codes! Transmission shifts better not that I added fluid haha. I get this weird sputter when I first start it up. It will go then sputter and coast. I give it some gas but it just sputters. I shut it down restart it and its ready to go? I have no clue of the cause. I heard things that the computer may be to blame I do not know.

Message: I hate throwing parts at it but you might consider
the MAP sensor. It plays a big role in the fuel
trim and doesn't always show a code.
