Subject: '97 Tensioner Alignment IP: Logged
Message: Easy fix turning into a headache. Please Help!
Read a lot of other posts that have been very
informative however I'm starting to lose patience
with my issue and can't find a similar example.
I have a '97 3.9L v6 slt 4x4 dakota that was
chirping like crazy so first thing I did was
change the belt. The new belt was a cheaper napa
belt and it kept popping off right away or at a
slight increase in rpm's. Upon inspecting the
pulleys some more I noticed the tensioner, despite
having good tension was noticeably out of
alignment. I then went to autozone and purchased
the duralast brand tensioner assembly. Put this on
and it still looks out of alignment, and is
tossing the belt same as before. I put my old belt
back on and it ran ok for about a week and then
the belt was shredded off. Thinking my old belt
was stretched or had deep enough grove depth as to
not pop off the pulleys for some time.
I have a goodyear gatorback in the mail which i've
heard runs great however I'm thinking the
tensioner will need to be aligned better unless I
want to keep wrecking belts, that is if the
gatorback even stays on.
As far as I can tell the new tensioner is flush
with its mount and bolted on correctly but it
looks to lean towards the front of the truck more
than it should. Do I need shims in there to
balance it out or is this duralast tensioner just
not the right fit or junk. I double checked
autozone's website and it's the right tensioner
they have listed. I couldn't find many results for
people having similar issues online.
Also I didn't notice any unwanted play in the
other pulleys and they don't seem to have any
bearing issues. Tomorrow I'm suppose to get the
new belt in so I was going to try putting that on
and double checking the tensioner attachment. If
that doesn't work plan B would be to go buy a
different brand tensioner. Need to get it fixed as
it's currently in a parking lot a few miles from
home where the old belt shredded and I don't want
to risk driving with out it.
Any input/help is greatly appreciated!

Message: Just went and checked it out again, idler does seem
to have a little bit of grinding when spun it
doesn't sound smooth like the rest of the pulleys so
I'll be replacing that, but that couldn't be causing
all this could it? I can't imagine it being too much
strain on the system with the shape it's in.
