Subject: '88 Dakota - Rough / Low Idle in Drive IP: Logged
Message: I bought an '88 Dakota (3.9, TBI, auto trans) a
few weeks ago. Good shape, no known leaks, doesn't
use oil. The fuel pump was shot, replaced it with
a Bosch and put in a new fuel filter. The ignition
coil is also new as of the day before I bought it
(although it's cheap one put in by the previous
owner and I want to replace it) because they were
throwing parts at it when the pump died.
Now the issue I'm having as of Friday is it idles
very low and rough when I put it in drive and
brake. Idles smooth when I pop it into neutral or
park. It didn't do this on Thursday, just started
suddenly Friday morning. I had been driving it for
two weeks before with no problems.
It gets pretty low but doesn't stall. Can't say
for sure how low, since there is no tach. But it
doesn't hunt either, like it doesn't even know
anything is wrong. If I just barely touch the
throttle it smooths out. If I'm coasting it's
fine, too. It doesn't give me trouble until I am
at a dead stop in drive.
The IAC plunger has a quarter inch of play in and
out, not sure if that's normal. Seems sloppy, but
I'm not familiar with the internals of the unit so
it might be ok. It twitches a little at key-on,
but doesn't actuate much or at all during idle.
No codes (other than AC clutch, which isn't
related). Throttle body looks clean.
Transmission seems fine, though the lever has a
bit of a hard pull to it in the morning and
sometimes I get a hard shift into drive or reverse
unless I let it sit in neutral first for a second.
Shifts smooth as butter when driving, though. I
don't hear any noise from it when the idle goes
down like it's slipping in and out of gear.
I'm suspicious of the TPS and IAC assembly.
Anything else I should look at before I replace
one or the other?

Message: It was the IAC that needed replacing. It was dead
and wasn't moving anymore. Once I got the new one
in and adjusted properly the problem went away.

Message: Thanks, my problem started about 80 miles into a tank of gas ,
I had let it run really low on fuel, gonna try fuel filter the. Iac
and egr and see if that helps. I'm getting a 52 code as well

Message: You may need to adjust the idle screw on the IAC.
I had to play with mine a bit to keep it from
pulling in 1st from a stop. Do you have a tach you
can use?

Message: No I don't. I have adjusted in and out on the screw, still struggling, was wondering if EGR could be causing it. I am getting a 52 fault code as well

Message: EGR problem wouldn't make it run rich (unless you
also had a massive restriction in your air intake,
and probably not even then).
When it's in reverse and running rough, does it
smooth out if you hold the gas down just a hair?
If so, you just need to adjust your IAC. Otherwise
you might want to replace the O2 sensor. Have you
checked your plugs to see if there are any signs
that your engine is, in fact, running rich?

Message: It doesn't really smooth out much. I think the iac was part of
the problem. I will check the 02 sensor
