Subject: 92 dakota backfiring IP: Logged
Message: My 92 Dakota 3.9 automatic has been progressively getting worse.
It is backfiring and running very rough.
I have to constantly restart it until it runs right but after driving about 10-15 minutes it gets so bad it will hardly run at all.
I then have to try to get it to rev up high enough to get past the point of backfiring but it usually just runs ok for a 100 ft or so and starts acting up again.
It has been suggested that the problem is either the engine control module or crankshaft position sensor.
Does this sound right?

Message: If this model has a EGR valve, it could be the
transducer is bad. Unplug the vacuum hose from
transducer to EGR valve and plug and see if this
solves the backfiring and running.
If this model does not have the EGR. Check fuel
pressure and, if is a fuel injected engine, check
the injectors and clean the throttle body, and
change the fuel filter.

Message: I was having similar problems with my 89. I tried unplugging
the EGR hose with no luck. Then I tried adjusting the timing
and it helped with the stalling not the backfiring. So I changed
the fuel filter and it ran great for awhile until I went over some
train tracks that had a dip in them... all of sudden it started
backfiring and sputtering again. So im assuming I have some
crap in my gas tank that got stirred up because it went away
after a bit of driving and that same week I filled my tank up and
drove out of the parking lot when it started again. Which
confirmed my theory of crap in the tank getting stirred up.
Hope this helps you out.

Message: I have a 93 and it was doing the same thing. What
I did that worked and got rid of it was new cap,
rotor, wires and plugs. That fixed the back
firing.
