Occasionally the solenoid on my 1995 Dakota fails to click in. I've eliminated switches and relays by installing a means of energizing it directly. Usually it starts normally. When it fails to click in I can usually start it by touching the control wire to battery positive. Yesterday it wouldn't click in so I hotwired the control wire. It made a slight arc (perhaps energizing the ignition circuit) but would not click in. After trying off and on for about 2 hours it starts normally again. Can someone tell me what causes such intermittent failure?
