Subject: 89 Dakota stalling/running rough IP: Logged
Message: Hello! This is my first ever time coming to a forum
for help, so please bear with me!
I have an 89 Dakota, automatic, v6, 2wd, throttle
body
In the past like two weeks, the truck has been
stalling, running rough at low speeds. To stop, I
have to put it in neutral and feather the gas to
keep it running. Then I have to QUICKLY put it in
drive and hit the gas before it stalls out.
I'm not to good with vehicles, but I'm pretty good
with following directions. If someone can tell me
where to start?
If you need any information, feel free to ask.
Thank you

Message: First things first, always check for codes. To check, turn the
key on/off/on/off/on and the CEL will flash. The codes are two
digit. The light will flash for the first digit then pause for a
second or two then flash for the second digit. Count those
flashes and you'll have your codes. If I recall 55 is the code for
end of codes or no codes stored. They will all be two digits.
It does sound like the EGR circuit is acting up but unless you
want to and can afford throwing parts at it, check for codes
first.

Message: Hey! Sorry about the long delay in the response! I hope you still look at these things.
The exact same thing was happening with my 1989 Dodge Dakota. We had just finished replacing the Head Gasket and were having the SAME PROBLEMS! I know you said it works now, and mine does too, but I noticed that for me, the problem was in the Transmission Kickback Arm. It was getting hung up on some pins on the drivers side (If you follow the arms path to the transmission, youll see it). I climbed under the truck and beat the arm (kinda roughly)with a hammer careful not to destroy it, but just get it tweaked enough so it didn't get hung up anymore. It runs great now after I did that. But I had the exact same problems, and that worked for me!

Message: I have a '96 dakota that stalls when I start it
after the first time around. What goes on is the
idle is too low. As long as I keep idle above say
800RPM, it won't die. Once I drive for a couple
blocks it is fine to let it idle on its own.
Resetting the IAC works for ~a week. That
transmission kickback arm is probably only
relevant to that issue and not mine, but if
not...maybe I give you more information to work
from. My next thoughts are a Throttle Position
Sensor or MAP Sensor. Not sure if an 89 has
those.

Message: Have your battery load tested. The symptoms your truck is
showing point to a weak battery. It will still start the truck but
voltage drops enough for the PCM to loose idle memory. Once
you drive it a little the battery voltage comes up to where it
should be.

Message: i am in need of help trying to find out why my truck
tries to stall when making a left turn. it only does
it when the truck is in motion making a left turn.
you can put it in drive sitting still and turn the
wheel to the left and it won't stall. any ideas on
what the problem could be?
