 Subject: 88 dakota 4wd. t-case disaster!

Hey guys, I've gotten alot of help with my 98 Dakota from you and now I'm in big trouble. I bought my son a $600 1988 dodge Dakota. 3.9L, automatic 4wd. Granted it was a cheap buy, but my coworker was cutting me a break for my kid. Well the truck is great, straight body, ruins amazing for 237k miles. My son was driving on the freeway yesterday doing 70 and his truck made a loud banging and clanging noises so he pulled off and called me. I got there and his transfer case was completely blown apart, and the driveline was laying under the truck, completely disconnected! I guess my question is.. 1: do you think the tranny made it ok? 2: what options do I have for a transfer case swap? I.e.: would a jeep tcase work? And thirdly, could I just throw in a 2wd tranny and just make it a 2wd truck? Its his first vehicle and I'm hoping to just get it moving again so he can just drive it until tax time.
