Subject: Fuel Gauge! IP: Logged
Message: I have read a lot of Q&A about the faulty fuel gauge in Dakota's but really haven't found anything useful. Maybe someone can help me here. I recently purchased a used 1994 Dakota SLT 3.9L 4x4. When I bought it the fuel gauge was stuck at about 1/8th tank. I figured it being an older truck to be the sending unit bad so I bought a new fuel pump and replaced the old one. Now the fuel gauge is at "empty" and doesn't move. So I now believe it to be a gauge or wire problem. Anyone ever "rewire" the gauge?...some schematic instruction would be great or any other useful info. Thanks in advance.

Message: yes, at this point I have went as far as testing all the wires back to the fuel pump and disassembling the dash and removing the fuel gauge and testing voltage to the "prongs" the fuel gauge sits on. I'm thinking the gauge is just bad. Going to get a different circuit board and instrument cluster to see if it fixes the problem.

Message: ok, so new fuel pump w/sending unit...replaced instrument cluster including fuel gauge...tested all the wiring and even made a couple of new ground connections. fuel gauge STILL don't work. anyone have ANY suggestions shy of burning the truck or installing an aftermarket fuel gauge? does anybody know if there is an aftermarket fuel gauge that will work with the factory sending unit/float?

Message: Hey man. i had the same problem on my dakota when i replaced fuel pump and the problem was that the fuel gage works by a plastic float thing with metal arm on the side of the fuel pump. you should try turning the fuel pump like an inch or so counterclockwise/clockwise and turn key on once you have turned it with the lines hooked up and see if you can get it to work. if not then i would go with wiring or gauge

Message: Thanks for the suggestion Keaton. I've considered that myself, but dropping the fuel tank back down is such a pain. But if it corrected your problem it may be worth the effort. Thanks!
