Subject: Backfiring/Popping V6 IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1994 Dakota with the V6 engine. It is my second 94 that I've owned. From the time that I bought the second truck it has mild backfiring and popping coming out of the exhaust during deceleration. It's not loud but annoying. The truck has always run excellent,no hesitation or rough idle. I have replaced the distributor cap and rotor,plugs,O2 sensor. This has been going on for the 7 years that I have owned it. My previous truck didn't do this. I have also checked my exhaust system for any leaks from the exhaust manifold back and have no leaks at all. I only have 1 O2 sensor on this truck. It's like there is a small amount of unburned gas escaping during deceleration that is burning in the exhaust pipe. I live in the mountains so when ever I'm going down hill it does this and I'm tired of it. Any Ideas???

Message: Mine has always done that. It's a V8 though and has a louder exhaust.

Message: I have been experiencing this for years with no problems. It is
even more evident in a lower gear going down hill dragging the
transmission to keep you from having to apply the brakes.

Message: Yes, exactly. But my first truck didn't do it. I have to think I'm wasting gas if there is still some to burn to cause the backfire.

Message: i had this with my 2001 v6. i fixed a large exhaust leak that was before the o2 sensors. i also removed and cleaned my tb. the idle air control was very clogged. I haven't had an issue of backfiring after doing these. so one of them was the issue for me.
