Guys: I just developed about 1 to 2 inch play in my steering wheel. That is the wheel can turn right or left about 2 inches and I can feel no steering. After that play, the steering works fine. What can cause it? Thx>>AJ

Check the steering shaft to the rack. Chances are one of those
u joints is bad.

OK received a call from my mechanic. Apparently both tie rods on each side need replacement with an alignment afterwards. Was quoted $390 for the work. Hopefully I'm not being taken but this is a safety issue.>>AJ

Unfortunately the tie rods didnt solve the problem. I checked the steering shaft and it rotates when I move the steering wheel the extent of the play so it seems like the issue is in the steering box. Anyone have experience with this issue?>>AJ

Did they change all inner and outer tie rods? If the slack is not from the ujoints then it is the rack. I'm at about 170k on my '00 and everything is nice and tight. Of course I've changed all the tie rods already.

Daddio yes both inner and outer tie rods were changed on both sides. Can I expect the steering rack to go gradually or is this a safety issue?

If the rack ahs that much slack in it. I'd change it as soon as possible. One of the teeth on either the rack or pinion side could break and that would not be good. But before you do that check those ujoints on the steering shaft. Those usually wear out before the rack does.

Be careful your steering shaft could fall apart leaving you with just the steering wheel.

Took the vehicle to another mechanic who confirmed that the issue is the u-joints on the steering shaft. Having it replaced and hopefully that will solve the issue. Thx to all who provided constructive comments.>>AJ
