Subject: Question about CV joints IP: Logged
Message: Guy's: Do the front CV joints rotate when the truck is only in 4 wheel drive or do they rotate all the time? I have a torn boot on one of my CV joints but havent replaced it as I use 4X4 infrequently. I have a hum in the front end so I'm wondering if the CV joint can be causing it. I had the wheel hubs replaced about 25K miles ago so I dont think its those. Tires are worn and could use replacing so I'm wondering if worn tires can produce a hum? Thx>>AJ

Message: Yes the CV joints DO turn as the wheels turn, you need to replace the boots, if not the joints will wear out fast. As for the hum, the tires can cause the hum, I thought I had a bad bearing and replaced the hub turned out a few weeks later I put a new set of tires on and the noise was gone. One thing more, you may notice different noises on different types of pavement as well, going from concrete to asphalt will change the noise, or from new asphalt to old asphalt will sound differently as well. Try the new tires and see if that changes the sound. Good Luck
