 Subject: 1989 2WD Dakota transmission problems

I need some knowledge from somebody out there. I have an 1989 Dakota that the tranmission (A500)is slamming hard (very hard) into gear and the O/D is not working (prob solenoid). This truck has been sitting form years because of tranny problems and it was given to my son. I simply have a very limmited knowledge of auto transmissions and reading forums has got me more confused. Can anybody give me some no bull poop direction to go. Thanks
