Subject: Valve cover gasket leaking IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a used 1994 Dakota V6 which I knew had oil
leakage around valve cover gasket and planned to fix. I took it
to my mechanic and he said not to bother changing the
gaskets due to 184,000 miles. He said it is an older vehicle
and you don't want to mess with these things unless you have
to. This just doesn't seem right to me but I don't know. Anyone
have any suggestions? Thank you

Message: I was told the same about my 2003 Dakota. The driver side valve cover has a leak and you can smell the oil burning off the manifold. The dealer mechanic said its a minor leak and not to worry about it. My truck only has 57,000 miles on it.
These mechanics don't seem to be interested in repairing anything anymore. They have a time limit on repairs and if they know its a job to replace a part and not enough time is given, they will turn it down.

Message: Have either of you ever thought of buying a service manual,
tools and gaskets and try the repair yourselves?

Message: I have tightened the bolts a little but still leaks.
I'll end up changing the gaskets myself sometime.
Seems like if you want the job done, do it yourself.
I just don't have a garage to do the work in so I
have to wait until I have time and a nice day
outside.
