Message: Yep, it's the timing chain. I've got a '97 and have changed two of 'em. The first time, I didn't know about the tensioner mod and the noise came back after only a month or so. You definitely need a new chain, sprockets and tensioner. Dodge did not originally use the tensioner in that production run. Your Dakota will probably run fine for a long time but the noise sounds like a diesel. I tolerated it forever after the first job until I finally bit the bullet to tear down the entire front section of the engine again---it's a BIG job!
