Subject: '04 Dak - "check guages" - oil pressure. IP: Logged
Message: I believed I dodged a bullet with this one. The main driver of the Dakota in my family, in a "by the way" moment, told me that the "check guages" light has been on for a few weeks. I also came to the realization that this occurs when you start the car and the oil pressure never budges from zero (warm or cold.. you roll the dice whether it shows pressure or not). Now, with the amount of driving done on this engine and the damage on a true zero oil pressure engine only verifies that isn't my problem. When I started it, and this happened to me, I shut off the truck and restarted it, and the oil pressure guage responded normally. It never goes out while driving, and never wavers from a normal pressure. You only see it not register at all sometimes when you use the vehicle. Kind of like when an ABS sensor that's sending bad signals - the ABS light comes on and the system just plain stops.. gives up, whatever. It knows it can't count on a legitimate signal, so it doesn't even bother registering?
Am I looking at a loose ground? Wouldn't a faulty sending unit still be starving my engine of oil and thus damage it and thus isn't my problem?
Ideas? Thanks!

Message: Your oil pump screen is blocked, you did not dodge a bullet!
Buy new oil pump and screen and you may save the engine!
Seen this too many times.

For weeks of traveling with hours and hours of runtime on zero pressure.. not low.. ZERO.. ? Damn, that AMSoil is beyond good.. Pbbt.. (not THAT good)..
IF my screen was blocked, yes I agree that stopping the engine for a sec could drop the blockage in the last place for oil to get by... but every time.. it doesn't hit when running.. revving.. and it doesn't drop low.. it is not registering pressure at all.. either normal pressure or none.. nothing in the middle.
I don't mean to reject or insult your post... but unlike our beloved Dodge dealerships, I'm not privy to start swapping out parts at a whim. Yea, I know a good engine is a terrible thing to waste, but it doesn't make sense... does it?

Message: Well, since it is Maine and currently 9 degrees Fahrenheit with moderate winds with nothing but and open driveway... I'm going to NOT check my oil screen right now and count on the fact that driving and hour and a half at highway speeds with ZERO oil pressure means some sort of sensor issue. I will be sure to apologize to this thread before posting questions about replacing a blown engine :P
Ever since I purchased this truck used in 2009 (with 86,000 miles), it has always had a "lifter clatter" for the first 1-2 seconds on start-up... I'm assuming until oil pressure builds. This noise does not sound different/continue/extend longer when the "check guages" light comes on. I assume I am still pumping oil to the top of the engine just fine.
