Subject: Best Year For Early 3.9L-V6 ? IP: Logged
Message: Hello all-
I am getting ready to swap out a 3.9L carb engine (4WD, auto trans) for a newer 3.9L in my 1987 Dak and have immediate access to both a '92 (2WD, auto) and a '95 (2WD, 5-spd trans). Both of similar mileages (~140K).
I know the '92 was advertised at 185HP and the the later engines were reduced to 175HP because of reduced exhaust pipe diameter (at least that is what I have read in my research here).
Aside from a slight change in HP, were there any other changes or engine improvements in the early 3.9L's after '92 that I should consider while I search for a replacement?
Thanks for your valued information.
Tom

Message: Yeah the one with 185 hp for sure! It doesnt matter what year engine as long as the motor mounts line up. make certain that you run open headers to eliminate the y pipe restriction issue though

Message: just find a 318 or 360 and swap in. its not any more work and the v8s will give you much more bang for the buck than the v6
