Subject: 3.9L V-6 Interchangability IP: Logged
Message: Hello all-
I have a good old '89 3.9L V-6 carbed, automatic transmission w/4WD and 246,000+ original miles. My Dakota has had a tough life but served me well and once I get to 250,000 I want to swap out with another engine that will easily bolt right in (not looking for high performance, just want to extend service life).
Later model engines are easy to find around my area and can right now pickup any of the following:
'88 3.9L from a 2-WD with manual transmission
'92 3.9L from a 2-WD with automatic transmission
'94 3.9L from a 4-WD with automatic transmission
'95 3.9L from a 2-WD with automatic transmission
All are ranging at ~140-150K miles but sound OK.
My questions are:
1. will all of theses later model engines bolt right in to my transmission w/o modification?
2. Did Dodge incorporate any significant improvements to these 3.9L engines that make one of these years better or worse than the others?
Thanks for any advice or info you can offer.
Tom
