Subject: 3.9 Missfire
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 98 3.9 V6 sport tht has been missfiring in 1,3&5 for a little while.

The codes I am getting are:
P0300 - Random/ Multiple cylinder missfire
P0301 - Cylinder 1 missfire
P0303 - Cylinder 3 missfire
P0305 - Cylinder 5 missfire
P1391 - Intermittent Loss of CMP or CKP

Tune-up has been done, spark plugs, distributor cap & rotor, ignition wires & coils, TPS,temperature sensor, crank position sensor and cam position sensor have all been replaced. All parts have been bought through NAPA so they should be reliable parts.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Just a guess but have you thought about the timing chain. I have a 96 dakota that has a little engine knock. Been doin a lot of research and tinkering and I have read that v6's are notorious for timing chains wearing and getting a whip. Sounds like an aftermarket tensioner fixes it. Heard from others that it makes it into a new truck.

The code above, read it, that is the cause of the misfire on random cylinders.

I know you changed the crank & cam sensors but you still have a issue in one or both of those area.

Thank you to both for your help,

rochdakota- I have been researching as well and the next
suspect was the timing chain. Have you ever replaced one or
is this a job for the shop? Also what kind of "knocks" have you
been experiencing? When it happens to to my truck the whole
thing lurches and begins to backfire.

Chumley- Do you know of a way I could possibly pinpoint
where the issue is, or am I back to a process of elimination?
Since both sensors have been changed do you think it could
be a wiring issue to the CPU or like roch said possibly timing
chain?

My 95 dak w/3,9s timing chain has been raddling since I bought it at 112,000. It now has 170,00 and still raddles but always runs as slow as it ever did. Unless your chain has skipped a tooth on the sprocket i dont think it is your problem

My 2001 3.9L Dakota also has a random misfire on 1, 3 and 5 cylindars. I had a shop diagnose the problem. They ran a dye test on the engine coolant and found evidence of exhaust residue. The bottom line - blown head gasket or cracked head. Have to remove the head to tell. Have to have the head machined to be sure of a good matting surface. They would only do both heads, eventhough only one was showing a misfire. That's because it is so hard to get to the heads, and you don't want to pay for the disassembly process twice if the other head should go.

I opted to replace the engine. Found one with only 41,000 for $850, including shipping. This option involves a little bit more work than fixing the heads, but not as much as you might think.

I fixed my random misfire, code PO300. Read Service Bulletin TSB18-48-98. Select 3.9 engine. Don't worry about all the clips, just route the coil wire over the top of the valve cover. Try to avoid running the coil wire parallel to the spark plug wires. Runs like a new truck, now.

Im having a Random Misfire Code of P0300. The scanner says its misfiring on cylinders 3 and 5, which also produce their own codes mentioned above. I have replaced the catalytic converter, distributor cap, coil, wires, spark plugs, and intake manifold gaskit. Along with other parts I have replaced, the truck is running considerably better, however, I am getting a check engine light still which is coming back to a random misfire. I have had the timing chain checked and it is good.

Im in desperate need of some help! What more can it possibly be. I am about to replace all of the vacums just because, and if that doesnt work, I will be replacing the fuel injectors soon after.

My truck is a 1999 Dodge Dakota 3.9 2wd. It has 130k miles on it.
Any or all thoughts are welcome.

I would change the cam sensor, if that don't correct it change the crank sensor.

One of them is your problem.

And you believed them? There are a number of causes for a misfire and 99% of the time it is not the head gasket!

A worn distributor shaft bushing, intake manifold gasket leak
are a couple of other things that can cause this random misfire
also.

I have a 97 Dakota with a 3.9 in it. 190,000 on the
clock. I was also having a rough time chasing down
random misfires. I did a full tune up and they went
away for a week and then they started to come back.
My solution came in the form of new Fuel Injectors.
I started with just one and the misfire on the
cylinder went away. I eventually replaced all 6.
Truck is running better than ever.

I also have a 97 Dakota 3.9l that has what sounds
like the same issues. It has 140k miles and never
gave me any issues for the past 7 yrs....till now !!
Cyl4 misfire, backfiring thru the intake and runs
rough, even at higher speeds. The plugs, wires,
distributor cap and rotor cap have been replaced.
Was running fine and just started getting a misfire
in cyl 4. Checked with OBDII and only got the PO304
cyl 4 misfire code. Any other ideas would be
appreciated !!

I have been working on a 2003 Dodge Dakota 3.9L V6 Auto 4WD Standard Cab Short Bed for months chasing a cylinder 3 misfire. Other cylinders are randomly misfiring, but nothing like #3. I have changed the timing chain, gears, and tensioner, catalytic converters, injectors and O-rings, distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs, coil, transmission, half the evap system, fuel pump/filter module, battery, and a host of sensors. After all that, cylinder #3 is still misfiring. The truck does not use or burn any fluids, oil is changed every 4 months regardless of mileage, and it has 157,000 miles on it. I will be doing compression check next. Thankfully, it is not my money being wasted on this terd.

Sometimes an intake manifold leak can cause misfires.
Another cause coule be a worn distributor drive bushing.

I have a 2003 Dakota Quad Cab 3.9 V6 2wd. I am having the same problem. P0303 #3 misfire. Like all of you I thought ignition. Till I did a compression check on that cyl and #1. #1 had 140 psi and the problem one #3 only had 70 psi. Now I am thinking bad valve, valve spring, sticky valve, push rod, lifter? head gasket or cracked head? Don't think its rings it don't use a drop of oil or smoke. I am at a loss...
