Subject: Won't start, Could be crankshaft sensor? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1997 Dakota 3.9 liter v6 2x4 with 180,000 miles. I was driving when my truck back fired twice than died. I changed the battery that was 13 yrs old, that was not the whole problem. Acid was on the posstive terminal and would not hold a charge. I tried to spray either in carb. It would not fire up. It sparked from ignition coil to distribator cap but no spark from distribator to spark plug. I disconnected ignition coil to try to get a spark from the frame of the truck but that was no good. I took off crankshaft sensor and tested it, not sure if I tested it correctly but it said it was ok. Could it be a short in voltage or signal?
Please help me...
Thank you
Jeff

Message: If truck will not start-could be crankshaft sensor in distributor.Pull cap and check rotor-crank sensor is under rotor-Motor will run with bad crank sensor, however very poor(backfire, skip,no power)

Message: Being that you posted a month ago, I kind've doubt that you will read this, but here goes, anyway- The sensor being referenced to is the CAMSHAFT position sensor. The CRANKSHAFT sensor is located behind the passenger-side cylinder head. Check crankshaft sensor. Spraying ether into the engine with no start sounds like there is no spark. Camshaft sensor controls fuel pulses. If not crankshaft sensor, then it could be other things such something with your asd, like a blown fuse or bad relay.

Message: I have a 1998 Dakota with the V6. 2 years ago, I stopped at a store and when I tried to restart it, it wouldn't restart. I had to have it towed home. The problem was the camshaft position sensor. It cost about 50 bucks and is located inside the distributor. It take about 5 minutes to change it.
