Subject: Gas in my oil/dropping of oil pressure IP: Logged
Message: Hi I have a 1994 Dodge Dakota V6
my issue is this at times my oil pressure drops, when goig around sharp turns or sometimes after when running for a few mins driving (like when the oil is hot)most the time the pressure comes back up within seconds but not always, when I chnage the oil I small gas and the oil becomes higher on the level, now what I was told is this my someone who didnt look at it but claims they know about dodge..
he said the pressure is dropping cause the dodge is picking up issues with the oil, and the issue is the gas in the oil thinning it out. he said to change the Fuel Pressure Regulator, that it puts gas in the oil when bad and after changing that to change the oil again and all if the issue should be fixed.. now the Fuel Pressure Regulator is 60.00 and I have no issues of changing it but dont have aextra 60 to use if that dont fix it.. and I got no clue where this is at on the truck if that is the issue.. now someone else said it was a bad Fuel Pressure injector but couldnt tell me which one or how to found out lol and they are about 65 each so I dont want to chnage all of them and the regulator to try to fix the issue, besides this the truck runs great I just got it for 200 and trying to use it daily to drive to and from work and so on any help is greatly needed thanks in advance

Message: Does the low pressure light go on or does the gauge just drop? Maybe its just a bad sending unit. With the oil smelling like gas thats probably not a good sign though. You can probably try hooking up a pressure gauge onto it where the sending unit is. I think its in the back by the distributor. Its kind of difficult to get a tool in there though... at least with the v8 becuase the firewall is so close.

Message: If your oil smells like gas you are runnning way too rich and dumping fuel into the engine. Your mileage must be horrible.
The first thing to do is check for codes. When was the last time the truck was tuned up?

Message: I think the 1994 is easy to check codes on. Put the key in and turn it to accessories on then off then on then off then on again. Watch the check engine light. it will flash for the 10's place then the 1's place. 12 is no big deal it just means your battery was disconnected lately and 55 means end of codes

Message: I just tuned it up, new plugs wires, cap rotor button, we I said i just got this truck last month it was sitting up for 2 years never started and it started right up when i put in a battery.. the light comes on then the pressure drops most the time the engine dont make any noise like when low on oil excepit for the first time I start it then it does a little till the oil pressure comes up and it stops, when I got this truck I filled the gas up niot topped off but full and I have not put anymore gas in it it is still about 1/4 tank left today and as I said I got this truck last month but I hardly drive it just to and from work which is just about 2 or 3 miles away and here and there to the store as well.. so you dont think that fuel regluator could be the gas issue as I was told ??

Message: If the check engine light isnt lit (assuming there is a bulb behind it that works) then there shouldn't be any codes other that come up other than 12 or 55. My light would only come on after an oil change and then the pressure goes up. Having the light come on after that is abnormal and it is probably more than just a bad gauge. The light that comes on is the low oil light and not the check engine light correct?

Message: Yes the check engine light does work but not on except at start up like it should, when the oil light comes on the pressure also drops at the same time, then when the light goes off again the pressure comes back up, mostly on sharpe turns or when the engine is hot.. I get almost to work and it come son but never atap or anything.. but as I said the oil smells like gas when i changed it.. now the pressure went all the way low week or 2 ago and never came back I changed the oil this is how I know it smelled like gas and the pressure came back up after. before I lost pressure all the way it was doing the same as now but I just thought was bad switch and had order one till this happen..so no one here thinks that the gas in the oil could make the pressure drop like that, thinning out the oil ?

Message: Well, it sure isn't helping. Gas will thin the oil/ destroy it's viscosity and lubrication abilities. If it's bad enough, it would be like filling the crankcase with water instead of oil.

It could the pressure regualotr. Could be an O2 sensor, MAP Sensor, leaky injectors. You need to check the codes again.

Message: Thanks daddiio, I posted after that I just tuned it up and all the plugs look old but not fouled out asnd there is no check engine light on to get codes from over all the truck runs great till the oil pressure drops and sometimes it pings or clacks and sometimes it dont

Message: A problem with the EGR system or a bad plenum gasket would cause pinging. A leaky plenum gasket could also allow fuel to dump into the oil. Remove the airhat from the TB with the engine off. Open the throttle and look down into the manifold. If you see oil, it's probably time to change the plenum gasket.

Message: Check codes, as stated. There can be codes stored without a Check Engine light coming on.

If you keep driving it like this you will have no bearings and rings very shortly.

Message: I'm with daddio about the plenum gasket, and Sluge98 about a plugged oil pump screen. If the plenum gasket is bad, you will get cross contamination of oil into the air stream, and gas into the crankcase. Gas in the crankcase will create LOTS of sludge in the oil, gumming up everywhere it can stick, as well as create a soupy mess of oil sludge at the bottom of the oil pan where the pickup screen is.
I'm running a rebuilt engine now after I the origional died because of this issue. Taking the oil pan off revieled about 2 inches of oil sludge, and the oil pickup was half clogged. I had to remove the pickup and use a heavy sewing needle to poke the carbon out of each little hole in the screen. Nothing else would remove the carbon deposits except physically pushing it out. The engine had horrible compression is some cylinders, low oil pressure, the oil pressure changed when cornering, and the final straw was one of the lifters died.
Check the pluenum gasket like daddio explained.

Message: have you changed the oil since you had the truck if notthere is a good chance that the previous owner added gas to the oil to thin it out because of a clogged pickup screen i have seen people do this (doesnt realy work and its dangerous)change your oil and your oil pressure switch the regulator will have nothing to do with this...good luck
