Subject: 1999 Dakota won't go over 60. IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota v6 and when i got it my cousin told me he had just put in a new computer and i had to go to someone to program it. It didnt bother me so i never did. The car runs perfect but when i go on the freeway and want to go over 60mph it wont let me. The rpm would be all the way to the 3 and it wont change gears to the next. Unless I drive it in long distances the car would get the hang of it and start chaging gears, but that is rare. Could the computer be the problem? and if it is what are some do's and dont's when trying to fix this with a mechanic.

Message: Sounds like it's not shifting into O/D. Find out what vehicle the computer came from. If it was a vintage before O/D transmissions, you are out of luck. If not, the solenoid pack or wiring may be at fault, or your transmission temperature sensor (the truck will not shift into O/D if it cannot sense that the transmission fluid has warmed up). The trans temp sensor is on one of the coolant lines from the transmission to radiator and has an electrical plug.

Message: Autobot16 without knowing what year truck the pcm
came out of there isn't much info.
Could try pulling the pcm look for sticker or #'s
and see if someone can get any info with that.
One other thing I'd like to suggest, Get under
there and have a look. check all wiring and plugs
to trans. Make sure they are all plugged in and no
chaffed or sorting wires. Also check to see if
wires and plugs are oil/fluid soaked as this could
also cause problems.

Message: Chances are you've got the wrong PCM. As Curly posted, get the numbers off of it. It could be just as simple as getting it flashed with the correct VIN as BONGLOGIC posted.

Message: Also check the electrical plug on the sensor that's mounted in one of the transmission cooler lines to the radiator (along the driver's side of the engine bay, I believe). Check the solenoid plug, which should be a 3-wire connector on the left rear of the transmission case, just above the corner of the transmission pan.
