Subject: Signs of bad wheel bearings? IP: Logged
Message: Guy's: I have a hum in my front end that seems to get worse with speed and was wondering if it can be wheel bearings. I have 110K miles on the odo. TRans fluid is still pink and doesnt smell burnt and no problems shifting. What are the signs of bad wheel bearings versus a differential? Thx>>>AJ

Message: That could be a bad wheel bearing. To make sure what you can do is check the wheels one at a time.
Jack one of the front tires up and make sure you have a jack stand under it! Nothing is worse than an accident that could be prevented.
Put one hand on top of the tire and the other hand at the bottom.
Then try to rock the tire back and forth. If it doesn't move then your wheel bearing is probably fine. However if there is some play it's probably bad or needs to be adjusted.
I know on my 93 dakota the front wheel bearings are adjustable. I can't explain how to adjust them over this. It's kind of complicated.
Goodluck

Message: Thx to your all's replies. I did change the wheel bearing and no more humming/growling. The parts themselves were $122/piece. A lot more than the wheel bearings of years ago.>>AJ
