Subject: V6 or V8? IP: Logged
Message: Gas mileage matters to me for environmental and financial reasons. I'm considering a 2001 quad-cab that has a V8. Do you think I should hold for a V6? Is the mileage a significant improvemnet? The drop in power is not a really big issue.
Thanks for the advice!!

Message: I've got a 2002 quad cab. Definitely get the V8. The truck is very heavy for the 6 to move around.

Message: Get real, too heavy. My daily driver is an '01 quad cab 3.9L V6 5speed, with 3.55:1 rear gears. Its got more than enough snap to smoke em, or shoot it to 90 mph while entering the highway, and best of all it gets 24.7 mpg constantly, show me a V8 with that kind of mileage.

Message: I have never gotten 24 MPG, and it sounds highly unlikely that any other Dak owner have more than 22 MPG or so.
Maybe you drive downhill a lot? I don't know...
I like my V6... could use a litte bit more power, but it's decent enough for me. My dad's Honda Odyssey has a 3.7L engine (V6) and it's better than mine... which upsets me.
Go with the V8.

Message: Go for a V8, get the 4.7L engine (only other choice is the 5.9L--> BIG PIG on gas). The 4.7L with 5spd CAN and does get close to 20mpg highway in a 4x2. Auto will get less, as will a 4x4...
A 5.9L engine (seems in just about any vehicle)=12-13 mpg city, 15 hwy (though I've done 17 mpg recently driving a sedate 73-75 mph without cruise-- Cruise actually gets worse gas mileage except for pool table flat areas...)
If I run my normal speed (80-85 mph) Say hello to 14.2 mpg...

Message: I hate to tell you, but I filled up again last night, 21.12 gallons = 498.6 miles. That tank worked out to 23.52 MPG.... By the way my truck now has 29,000 on it and it has no crap on it, no AC, no Cruise nothing. The only options its got are bucket seats, and I weasled the 16" wheels out of the dealer. It will get that mileage all day, any day.

Message: Makes me feel bad.....
I have an '01 CC Sport 3.9L Auto with a soft tonneau cover.... I soooooo wish I could get that kind of mileage. Then again, I don't really do a ton of highway, especially not long distance. Cruising speed on the highways here is about 75-80 mph, which I regularly do... usually on the 75 side.
To date the mileage average is a little under 18 mpg.
