Message: 97 Dakota V6 auto 4X4 36000 miles always garaged.
Looking for some direction. Truck had a low battery due to dome light being left on for I don't know how long. Charged the battery and it would not start. Had spark and gas at the fuel rail. Gave it a shot of carb cleaner and it turned over and ran as long as you gave it some gas, take your foot off the pedal and it dies. Gave up and let if sit for a day and started right up, few days later and again it wont start or run if you don't have your foot on the gas. Only use it to pull the boat and for odd jobs, never gave me a problem before. Any ideas?

Message: Can it be that easy? Battery has held a good charge for a week and cranks strong.

Message: Chargie is correct. At least have you battery load tested. I bet it will not pass. A weak battery can still start you truck but the voltage will drop too low and the PCM will not hold the idle memory. The symptoms you describe are the first signs of a weak battery. And especially with old man winter knocking on the door, if that battery is not dead it soon will be. Been there done that and even got the T-shirt!

Message: If the battery is good, will start but not idle it's probably the Idle Air Controller. You can try cleaning the gunk off the plunger, but it's only a $30 aftermarket part. Just replace it. Incidentally, the motor should run as long as you keep the rpms above idle--for those who encounter the problem away from home.
