Subject: Engine revs loud IP: Logged
Message: 2001 Dakota v6 - Engine sounds very loud when I take it out... like its revving high but its not, revs appear normal 1500-2900. Oil level is fine and changed a cpl months ago. Had rear end replaced recently and tranny fluid is ok too.
Maybe oil pump? Suggestions??
Thanks,
William

Message: It's normal when the engine is cold, the first time you drive in first gear; then it should go to normal. If it's more than that, change the fan clutch.

Message: Interesting note - Taking off the fan clutch is very difficult if rusted and been on for a long time. The water pump pully mechanism turns so you cant turn the large nut to get it off.
After 2 hours of improvising ways to hold the pully (tried vice grips on the pully, wire cables through the water pump holes etc..) What finally worked was I put an L-shaped allen key in one of the holes on the pulley and brace it against the top of the pulley below, so I was able to stop the pulley from moving so I could actually crank the nut off. Took all my strength but I was very relieved to get it off eventually.
