I have an 02 with 102,000 miles and I'm wondering whether to change the alt before it goes and leaves me stranded. How many miles have you all gotten out of your orig alternator? Thx>>AJ

I replaced mine at 196,000 but I'm not sure if it was the original or not. mine was still charging, the bearings were going out, made a lot of noise.

325,000 on mine. I just replaced the original starter last month.

Thats my question also. I have a 2002 dodge dakota sport plus regular cab V6 Patriot Blue with Kenwood and 8 speakers and a Satelite Radio reciever and Dual Stiff swaybars, KYBs all four corners and Yokahama GEOLANDER HTS's 235/75/15 Clean with 133,000 Miles. You can eat off of the engine. Its a street truck. I just changed the front brakes. Did oil change, Powersteering fluid exchange, brake fluid exchange. I am worried about the Altenator when I turn on the headlights and foglights I hear a bearing making noise but not alot. I changed the Belt drive tensioner/pully, idler pully and belt about 3000 miles ago. Any ideas is it the Altenator? What happens when it fails does it lock or hurt any other components??? HELP HELP

If you're that worried, change the alternator.
You can listen with an automotive stethoscope or through a length of heater hose to pinpoint where the noise is coming from.
