2000 4 x 4. There is a fluid leak coming from this area. Is this commonly a hose issue or the cooler itself?

I'd say it is a leaky hose unless you did some offroading that could have damaged the cooler itself. Crawl under there and take a look.

I think you're referring to an auxiliary transmission fluid cooler, not power steering. The PS does not generate enough heat to need an external cooler. If it's the one in the radiator, yes, replace the radiator immediately, before the transmission fluid is contaminated by anti-freeze, that will follow when the tubes rot out.

Your transmission will not cool down as well.
So by not replacing the cooler you risked your transmission burning up. Smart decision!

Power Steering cooler. Mechanic showed the input/output lines and where they ran. It is not tranny or radiator related. The truck has a factory installed tow package of which the cooler was part.
