Subject: Timing Chain Tensioner?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1993, v6, rwd, and about 160,000

I'm about to replace the timing belt. And when getting the prices for the parts and saw a tensioner can be purchased. I was wondering what advantages of adding a tensioner? I've heard it can get rid of the chain rattle, but is there anything besides that?

I saw pics of someone doing a timing chain replacement on their dakota and you can see pics of before (where there is no tensioner) and after (where there is a tensioner). Here is the link

It is recommended to add the tensioner. It will not only stop the rattle but will prevent premature wear. why do you think the factory started installing it on later models? I've got about 140k on my '00 and I am no where near needing to change the timing chain.
