 Subject: Another question about P0138

My engine light came on today when I was on my way home. I checked and it was the P0138 code. Looked it up online and was going to change the O2 sensor.
While I was on my way to Autozone to get the part the light went off. So now I am wondering if I need to change the sensor or not.
I plan on checking the wiring for a short tomorrow, but is it normal for the light to go off on its own? The only other time I have had the engine light come on, it stayed on until the problem was fixxed (new gas cap that time).

2000 Magnum V6, 77405 miles.
I could not find any bare wires when I checked them, but the engine light still hasn't came back on.
