Subject: 3.9L Fuel Problem? IP: Logged
Message: I have a '94 Dakota with a 3.9L that will not start. It sat for about 10 years with a bad fuel pump. We changed the pump, drained the tank, new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, repaired some of the wires eaten through by mice, and it still wont start. Fuel pump is priming fine, engine turning, spark at coil and each cylinder, and clean fuel running to rail (Blew out the line). Any thoughts? We poured gas down the throttle body and it started for a sec. Could the rail be clogged or is it this bad splice near the relay I hear about? Would it be the bad splice if the pump is priming? Thanks!

Message: Is there nothing that anyone can suggest for this problem? Could the injectors be clogged/ bad? I will try that splice but are there any other ideas?

Message: If you're getting fuel to the rail & spark it
wouldn't be the 115 splice.
The spark strong and hot enough?
The truck sitting this long 2 other things come to
mind.
Totally clogged injectors or clogged exhaust.
Mice, rats or tree rats (squirrels) could have
built a nest in it.
To check this remove the O2 and use the compressor
to blow some air through it.
Bang on the muffler with the side of your fist.
Does it sound full?
(they could have clogged that up)
Only way to check that is remove it.

Message: Thanks. I will definitely check the exhaust. I did start for a sec when we poured fuel into the TB but then it gave a loud thump when dying. Any way to check the injectors though? Take off the rail and blow air through them? Thanks again!

Message: No, and that's a bad idea.
They would have to be flow tested and it's not
cheap.
*check the exhaust first*
You could always remove a few injectors and get a
look at the nozzles.
Problem here a truck sitting that long could have
a host of other problems.
Check the wires to your crank sensor also,
Make sure they are not broken or chewed.
(location-> back of motor toward passenger side,
2 bolts hold it in)
Take a flash light and take a good look down the
throttle body.
I'll keep checking back from time to time, offer
as much help as I can.

Message: Thanks Curly, I checked the crank sensor (hard to see the wires by the way) and noticed that they were disconnected up near the fuel rail! I think the culprit was an inexperienced mechanice who was spliceing random wires years ago. Anyhow, I checked the injectors before that, they looked clean but didn't see any fuel coming out of the ends. Either way after checking all that I banged on the muffler, did not sound too clogged but it didnt matter because I could not get the pipes disconnected anyway! Either way, with all I checked, I pured a little gas in the TB and she started up. Rough for a few min but I bet the computer was just relearning because it smoothed out eventually. Can't thank you enough for you help and if I have any more issues, and you're around, I would appreciate the help! Thanks again!

Message: Check for codes first. Common problem is a splice leaving the underhood fusebox about 4 to 6 inches below it. Check it, clean it rework it preferably soldering it. Also, crank sensor too. Check for spark and fuel pressure at the fuel rail.
