Message: My Dakota has 55K miles and I have been getting the standard minor antifreeze leak at the thermostat housing. I replaced the standard unit with the recomended robert shaw 180 unit and was going to change the hoses since the truck has 55K miles. Of course when I held the new hose up to the old it wasn't the same, damn Discount Auto Parts, so I just changed the thermostat. My question is what is the life expectance of the hoses? Is it overkill to change them every 50K?

Message: 55K Sounds about right. Although I personally would reccomend anytime you change the coolant you change your hoses. Hoses aren't that much when you come to think about it and sure beats sitting on the side of the road waiting on a tow truck to come take you home.
Just my opinion

Message: Yup You are on track with the hoses. I'd change them. I'd use what Mother Mopar sells. Yeh, yeh, sticker shock, but U know it'll fit no probs. Here in Phoenix a dead cooling system in rush hour traffic is HELL, not to mention embarassing. Also make sure your cap is new. That's cheap insurance. Also put the wraps back on the hoses. Thems the little "chinese finger trap" looking mesh things. And secure 'em with ty wraps and black tape. They reinforce the hoses at the bends which are the weak spots. i fyou have any questions where they go. Look at a new Dak. Get the wraps, new or junkyard. Put em on. Believe me a bit of overkill goes a long way. BTW.. give the rest of the cooling system and hoses a look over and teh same treatment. You'll like yourself better as you pass all the others on the side of the road with their hood up and rad juice coming out the grille. have a good one. GO DIAMONDBACKS!!!
