This is gonna be a long post....

I have a 94 Dodge Dakota Extended cab 3.9L V6 4x4..

The truck is shutting off while driving. I changed the crank sensor, mass air flow, tps, fuel/air sensor, distributor cap, plugs and wires. I figured out that nothing needed changing but the crank sensor (the one taken out was glued together). Even swapped computers and coils with an identical truck.

Had an oil change about 3 weeks ago, oil and pressure is good.

My boyfriend took the truck and she shut down. He had a friend with him so while his friend whined over the truck my boyfriend was able to determine that she had no fire and the fuel nozzle under the breather had no fuel coming out.

After sitting for a few minutes he shook the back of the truck and she started up no problem. With the truck running she had tons of fuel pressure.

It looks like it has something to do with the automatic shut down relay....

What would cause this relay to cut in and shut the truck down but then start again in a few minutes or a few hours?????

Checked the relays and changed them with ones that I knew for sure were working and she is still shutting down.

Today we checked all wires coming from the relay box and from the computer and nothing was amiss.

Where is the automatic shutdown sensor located? (if there is a rear end collision or roll over)

Where is the location to plug in an OBD???

Thanks for any help
Samantha

hate to say it Samantha but being a 94 model it is
an ODB1 not 2 and it does not have a port only 96
and newer have the port and its under the dash
driver side if you have codes from a check engine
light you must turn the key to the on position
(where the radio and accessories work, not
running) then off again three times the third time
leave it in the on position and the light will
flash, count the flashes. there will be short
pauses between a set of two numbers and a long
pause between each set of two. 55 is the end code.

as for the problem with the shutdown could be as
simple as a ground wire, have had experience with
other cars doing same. good luck finding it if you
start looking, or something in the tank that is
clogging the pump also had experience. something
can clog it up and shut it off and as soon as the
fuel pressure is gone it releases the object
sucked up by the pump.

Was able to get a read from an OBD1 and it came up as crank sensor, egr and a/c clutch...

Replaced the second crank sensor and the truck ran fine until this morning when she shut off once again and wouldn't start for 30 minutes...

Gonna take the pan off and check all the wires under there. All wires from the relay box and computer have been checked and double checked and taped up again.

I think it is time for a For Sale sign before I start getting migraines LOL

There is a factory splice about 4-6 inmches below the underhood fusebox. 3 wires to 1, red or red/white. Make sure that it is clean and tight. Preferably re-done and soldered. It is a common problem with the earlier Daks such as yours. I believe it powers the fuel pump, ignition and ASD relay.

Thanks for your help!!!

Checked all wires. They were all good surprisingly. Took her back to the garage for another OBD reading and egr came up... checked that and that was the problem.

Where it plugs in there are 2 metal teeth type thingys and one was broken off. It is being replaced as I type.

My fingers are crossed that that will solve my problems.

I just had this same problem!!! I have a 93, and
heres the thing!! check the wiring harness under the
cab and make sure the cab is not pinching it! mine
was cut nearly in half and this would explain why
its shuting off because when you turn the cab pushes
down and pinches the wires blowing the auto shutdown
relay. it was right up by the left front wheel well.

Thanks Max, I will get that checked out tomorrow.

I don't know what else to do with the truck. It is getting very frustrating. We will change another sensor or wire she will run fine til I drive it and she will shut off. But she does it going straight, reversing, and the newest thing.... the RPM's will drop down to zero and if I don't give her a shot of gas in time I will lose acceleration and then she will stall.

There are no OBD1 codes so I am thinking wires....

Check the throttle postion sensor, I had similar problems
with my 94, and it was the sensor.

Could be the Hall effect pickup, or the distributor shaft bushing that's notorious for wearing out. That can cause a sudden stall.
