Message: Hey guys,
I drive a 1996 Dodge Dakota Sport 3.9L V6.
I've been having a problem recently where after
driving, I look under the hood and see that
coolant has sprayed over the front of the engine.
It seems to be originating from near the radiator
spout and cap. It sprays out from that location
and over the fan shroud and various places on the
front of the engine. I've replaced the radiator
cap and made sure the coolant is completely filled
in the radiator and in the overflow tank.
Enough coolant has sprayed that it hits the belt
and causes the radiator fan to squeak. I know that
the origin of the leak is near the radiator cap,
for the spray pattern begins there and spreads
from that origin.
Also, I've run the truck with the hood open for a
lengthy period of time (enough for the thermostat
to open) and no sign of a leak has developed. This
only happens when I drive around. Does that
indicate a puncture in the radiator itself? I'm
beginning to think that it's either that or the
overflow tank return line.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks,
Steven

Message: It's probably the plastic piece that the cap fit onto. Try running the engine up to temp then shut it off and look for the leak then.
