About 3 weeks ago, I bought a 2000 Dakota Sport 4x4 with the 3.9 V6 and a 5 speed. Since the day after I bought it, I've had a problem with the truck occasionally sputtering at low speeds. It only does it when first driving (within about a half mile or so), then doesn't do it again after that. Once I get going, it drives without a problem. I can hear a rattle from under the cab (sounds like it's under the passenger side), and I only hear the rattle when it sputters. It feels like it's going to stall, but doesn't. It almost seems like a catalytic converter, but it's too random for that. If I accelerate hard, I can usually avoid it happening, but with stop lights and such that's not always possible. I had the fuel injectors and throttle body cleaned when I had the truck inspected, but that didn't fix it. I also have the P0455 code, but that didn't come on until about a week after I first had this issue. I'm on an extremely limited budget, and need to limit the trial and error as much as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

-Tom

Throw parts at it like everyone else! Look at the bright side of doing that, you will have a new truck!

Check your IAC, idle air control. It's on the back of the TB. Mine did that too, Wouldn't run cold, but fine after warming up, replaced that, all good. Don't know about the noise tho. Maybe unrelated. something loose moving around while the engine shakes.

Tom, I have a 94 Dakota with the 3.9, and had the exact problem you are describing. My water temp sensor was bad, and making the computer think it was never reaching operating temp. In the process of getting to that solution, I found a corroded neck from the thermostat to the upper radiator hose, which had kept the temp sensor wet and caused its failure. There are two temp sensors on my 94. The one wire is for the gauge, and the two wire for the computer. Hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi Tom,
I have 01 3.9v6 Dakota SLT.I have been chasing the answer to this problem for a long time now.I have spent $$$ replacing everything under the hood.Still I am getting that 455 code with check engine light. My fuel mileage sucks too.I heard the rattle also and traced it to my PCV(new) just a clattering away.I sometimes get noise from the tension Pulley(new)at idle only.Seems to me these are just from the engine not running right yet.I have replaced everything in the EVAP system except the leak detection pump.I don't think this is causing the misfires when cold.My next move is the PCM.It's the only thing I can think of that's left.If you have fixed yours, don't keep it a secret. If it works I will post it...The only other fix I can think after that is a Chevy.

Guess what?Well I went out again today to try to find this elusive EVAP leak.I found IT!!!I thought no way it was the gas cap because I already replaced it.Wrong wrong wrong!!!The tards at OhReallys had given me the wrong one.I have been chasing my tail trying to fix this and was sabotaged by idiots that don't know how to read!To say I'm peeved because of all the gas I've wasted is an understatement.Whatever you do make sure you get the right cap.I went to Autozone and it was $10.I'm sure I wasted 10x that these few monthes with the wrong one.Something so simple shouldn't carry so much weight as to the performance of these trucks, but it does.Anyone with the P0455 or P0446 code just replace the cap first.Make double sure you get the right one though. The truck idles smooth again,NO more clattering from the idler pulley or loud chattering from the PCV now too.I mean it's amazing the difference.I haven't gotten on the Hwy yet but I bet the subtle spark knock disappeared too.Just unreal what difference it made.Hope you get your truck back too!
