Subject: Overheating, Need Some Help Daddio Plse IP: Logged
Message: Ok. First of all, the truck is a 2002 Dakota 3.9 V6. Before I started having this problem I had to replace the water pump, not a big deal. I had a friend come over to help me for an extra set of hands and a little know how on this stuff. couldnt get the engine driven fan nut of the water pump it looked original so my friend said " you dont need it, because you have an electric fan in hear already (has a tow package)so into the scrap metal bin it goes attached to the old water pump. get everything buttoned up everythings hunky dory for about 2 weeks. It overheats the first time coolent everywhere, I get it home and thought I didnt replace the thermostat silly me. I go down to the auto store (almost right next door) and replace it. Still having trouble, got to doing some research, people are crying out "its a head gasket"- seems like a almost worse case senerio, but no smoke so as far as i can tell not a head gasket problem, but im still bubbling over through my resevoir tank and my upper hose is usally empty to little coolent, Seals from the intake and water pump are great no leaks from what i can see. I read to get the air out of the system. Not a bad tip never thought of that. but i have upper and lower hoses coming and a failsafe thermmostat on order, supposed to arrive tomorrow early PM. besides replacing the parts and bleeding the air out, should I get another fan electric? or replace the engine drivin one? the small elecric one in there right now is not very big.
I would really like to fix the problem and not have to worry about it anymore.
From what i can see Daddio and and a couple others seem to be helping alot of people out thanks in advance

Message: Whatever you do, do NOT install that failsafe thermostat. Use a standard one. Change the hoses, refill the sytem as much as you can, then start her up leaving the radiator cap off. As the engine warms up and the thermostat opens you'll see the fluid level go down from the hole where the cap goes. Keep adding until you can't add any more. This will take a while. Then install the radiator cap and shut the engine off. Keep checking the fluid level in the reservoir for the next few days. You may have to add a little more but you should have all of the air out of the system.
I just changed my waterpump and that is how I got the air out of the system. You just have be careful when the engine starts coming up to operating temp. That fluid will burn you. Just let the engine idle while filling it with coolant. Don't rev it up or anything and you should be ok.

Message: Did you change that bypass hose by the water pump too?
And failsafe and duralast are the worst thermostats ya can
have.
Duralast just makes bad parts I think in my opinion.
Failsafe, sucks because they stick open when they fail which
is almost always the case, they always fail LOL.
And make sure u fill up both sides of the engine with water
and antifreeze, there is the top radiator hose where the cap
is, and there is a coolant reservoir(at front where the radiator
is)
I say fuggedaboutit for duralast and failsafe.

Message: Reccomend a manufacturer or Brand for the thermostat? So check the both the reservior and radiator filler cap levels at the same time?

Message: I would suggest you use "Stat" they have been making thermostats, and radiator caps for a lot of years I would trust them and their products.
Good Luck

Message: dakota49, I think you meant "Stant" brand thermostat and cap.
Courtney, you only need to check at the cap when you first start refilling the system. Anytime after that, just check the level in the reservoir. You do NOT want open the radiator cap just after shutting a hot engine down.

Message: And make sure that upper radiator hose isn't cracked at the
plastic, they tend to crack by where the cap is.
No u refill at the cap, and then refill the reservoir is wat I
meant sorry. Just make sure u follow daddios instructions on
refilling where the cap is making sure u get the air out of the
system.
