Message: I'm not daddio, but I have done this on other trucks, and it is easy. just make sure you don't remove the temp sensor for the computer, it can make your truck run bad. Remove the temp sensor for the gauge on my 1988 there is a temp sending unit on either side of the thermostat housing, one is for the computer the other is for the dash gauge. That could be your problem, you may be able to check it by unpluging the sending unit and see if the gauge does anything, then use a jumper wire to see if the gauge moves. just don't let it stay on too long it could hurt the gauge just turn on the key and see if the gauge moves then turn it off.
Thats all I can suggest. If you do use an aftermarket its really not hard to install. just find a place to mount the gauge and there will be a cable looking piece that will need to be screwed into the water temp hole and hook up a dash light wire so when you turn on the lights the gauge light will come on. An easy way to do that is find a Key on hot fuse and run a wire from the fuse to the light for the gauge and the light will be on all the time while the engine is on.
Good Luck,

Message: I'm sorry, to hook up a jumper wire there are 2 prongs on the plug in just put a wire from one prong to the other, again just turn on the key for a short time to see if gauge moves, if it does, the gauge is good and most likely the sending unit is bad.
Again good luck

Message: "I had a water pump start leakin and think I have it stopped". The only way to stop a leaky waterpump is to change it out. I just got through changing mine. Tstat, waterpump, bypass hose and lower radiator hose. 2.5 hours.
Anyway just follow Dakota49's instructions and you'll be alright. Most gages come with their own sending unit.
